CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT PROGRAM DIRECTOR

UConn, John Dempsey Hospital


Purpose of Class:

At UConn Health, John Dempsey Hospital (JDH), this positon is accountable for directing the clinical, operational, training and administrative initiatives of the Cardiothoracic (CT) Physician Assistant (PA) Surgical service line with the Division Chief Cardiovascular and Nursing Leadership.

Reporting Relationship:

Receives administrative direction from the Division Chief Cardiovascular Surgery and Nursing Leadership.

Supervision Responsibility:

Directs mentors and coaches staff within areas of responsibility and hospital wide as assigned.


Experience and Training:

  • Certified Physician Assistant and three (3) - five (5) years of experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery.

  • Must possess and maintain a current PA license issued by the Connecticut Department of Public Health in accordance with the applicable Connecticut General Statutes.


Minimum Qualifications Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of principles and practices of clinical care and healthcare administration; considerable knowledge of relevant policies and procedures; knowledge of quality assessment and/or improvement techniques; knowledge of requirements by federal, state and regulatory bodies; excellent interpersonal skills; effective oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to make sound clinical assessments and institute safe and efficacious care within the structure of the collaborative health team; ability to set priorities; supervisory ability.


Special Requirements:

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain Connecticut Controlled Substance Registration for Practitioners issued by the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain United States Drug Enforcement Administration Registration issued by the United States Federal Government.

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain eligibility for participation in federal health care programs as defined in 42 U.S. 1320a-7b(f).

  • Incumbents in this class are required to possess and maintain relevant registration and /or certification.


Preferred Requirements:

Three to five years’ experience as Physician Assistant in CT Surgery as part of patient population mix

Principal duties and Accountabilities:

CLINICAL

  • Provides a board range of diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive health care services including initial assessment and ongoing surgical care.

  • Works with considerable independence as a member of the CT Surgery health care team.

  • Take medical histories, examines and treats patients/offenders, orders and interprets laboratory tests and x-rays; formulating diagnoses and treatment plans and prescribing medication and monitoring responses to medications and adjusting accordingly.

  • Documents and records progress notes and notifies attending physician of significant problems

  • Makes surgical rounds to observe and document pertinent progress of hospitalized patient/offenders.

  • Orders referrals to specialist as necessary

  • Responds to emergency situations

  • Counsels and instructs patients/offenders in preventive care and health issues such as effects of nutrition, exercise and prescribed treatments.

  • First assistant in Operating Room to the CT Surgery cases

  • Orders medical devises as necessary.


ADMINISTRATIVE & CLINICAL LEADERSHIP

  • Directs and managers the staff of the assigned Service line.

  • Direct the Clinical, Operational and Administrative initiatives of the PA CT Surgical service line with the Division Chief Cardiovascular and Nursing Leadership.

  • Lead the PA CT Surgical program with the responsibility for growth and strategic initiatives.

  • Partner with leadership in the Department of Surgery Service Line to lead quality improvement initiatives aimed at improving quality of the flor CT Surgical patients throughout UConn Health.

  • The successful candidate will have strong background and interest in education to further the Divisions commitment to provide OR/ICU clinicians and staff with skills in CT Surgical management.

  • Coordinates patient care with team members, other departments and community agencies.

  • Ensures services are in compliance with professional standards, state and federal regulatory requirements.

  • Facilitation of weekly CT Surgery team meetings for care coordination and oversite.

  • Provide supervisory oversite and educational development of the staff assigned to the service line.

  • Ensures clinical competency and adherence to policy through practice analysis and case review of CT Surgical PAs with physicians.

  • Administrative oversite to the hiring, evaluation, mentoring and discipline of all service line staff.

  • In conjunction with the Division Chief Cardiovascular, designs changes in the care delivery system.

  • Administrative oversite of Financial and Billing Compliance. Works with operations on funding and reimbursement models.

  • Performs related duties as required.


Schedule:

Full time salaried position, 40 hours per week 7:30am-4:00pm Monday - Friday with on-call as required.
