Position Summary
The Sterilization Manager coordinates the daily operations of the sterilization department functions and assures instrument and equipment processing. These include but are not limited to cleaning and decontamination, assembly, packaging, sterilization, and distribution of all materials and supplies to the patient care givers. Supervises employees and serves as a resource to service problems and/or questions in regard to infection control policies and procedures. Assists in the training and development of staff and ensures that the department is run according to institutional policies and any applicable regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
The Manager- Sterilization will be responsible for, but not limited to:
- Organizes, directs, and coordinates functions and activities in the Sterilization Department.
- Maintains established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
- Performs duties of Central Supply technician as necessary, sterilizing instruments, equipment, and supplies as required; directs staff to handle and store instruments, equipment, and supplies appropriately and within departmental requirements.
- Recruits, orients, trains, counsels, disciplines, and evaluates staff in accordance with all internal policies and procedures in addition to delegating tasks and responsibilities.
- Prepares work schedules, assigns personnel to specific tasks, and evaluates work performance.
- Maintains and develops standard operating procedures for the department.
- Regularly reviews policies and procedures and makes changes, or recommends changes to superiors as necessary.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by establishing personal networks; understands various sterilization techniques and when to utilize them.
- Oversees sterilization, assembly, and storage of medical supplies and equipment.
- Ensures staff compliance with sterilization techniques, policies, and procedures.
- Makes sure that sterilization activities are properly documented and participates in the maintenance of department records.
- Periodically evaluates condition, function and appropriateness of existing equipment, and makes recommendations to supervisors for replacement and upgrading as necessary.
- Participates as an active member in various organizational committees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience
Four years of experience in Sterile Processing. Previous management or supervisory experience preferred.
Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) required from the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM)
