ABOUT PARK AVENUE ARMORY

Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create, students to explore, and audiences to experience epic and adventurous presentations that cannot be mounted elsewhere in New York City. The Armory’s Arts Education Program immerses students from New York City public schools in the creative process of world-class artists and fosters students’ own creative instincts. The program has three main initiatives: 1) Production-based Programming, in which students experience works of music, theater, dance, and visual art, and participate in workshops with Teaching Artists; 2) Partner Schools, in which deeper relationships with schools are created through customized residencies and creative opportunities; and 3) the Armory Youth Corps, a paid and closely mentored internship program for students ages 16-25 with nearly 100 participants annually.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The School Programs Manager is responsible for managing the Production-Based Programming Initiative and participates in long-term department planning. The School Programs Manager reports to the Associate Director of Education, School Programs, and takes direction from the Director of Education. The School Programs Manager works closely with the School Programs Coordinator and collaboratively within a larger team of 6 full-time staff and 20 part-time teaching artists across the department.

Due to the nature of this role and interaction with staff across the organization, this is a fully on-site role.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the Production-Based Programming Initiative, including scheduling the Armory Teaching Team, keeping an up-to-date availability calendar and meeting/workshop schedule, and being on-call outside of office hours during peak workshop dates for workshop cancellations/rescheduling/staff sickness
  • Coordinates and manages communications with the Armory’s roster of NYC public schools, including invitations to upcoming programs, scheduling workshops, sending performance/installation logistics, and visiting schools to observe workshops
  • Manage logistics of student matinees and installation hours for each Armory artistic production, including creating a timeline of necessary meetings and deadlines in preparation for student matinees
  • Develop and manage budget for Production-Based Programs, including tracking expenses, processing and reviewing invoices and purchase orders, and monitoring budget variance
  • Generates program narratives to assist with grant proposals and reports as requested
  • Process biweekly payroll of the Armory’s Teaching Team
  • Directly supervise at least one School Programs Intern, including managing schedules, assigning projects and tasks, and ensuring work is completed in a professional and timely manner
  • Proactively support the Armory’s Youth Corps interns through one-on-one mentoring to help develop professional and personal goals, seeking ways to link student’s interests with opportunities and the Armory, and beyond
  • Perform other administrative responsibilities as needed and directed, including supporting the Partner School Program and other Arts Education Department programs and initiatives and Armory events and productions

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to successfully perform this job. A successful candidate will meet many of these requirements and have the desire and capacity to learn the rest on the job.

  • Knowledgeable advocate for the arts and arts education with exceptional planning and organizational skills. Results and detail-oriented project manager with the ability to set and meet deadlines
  • Experience building relationships with administrators, teachers, and students in the New York City public school system and/or community-based organizations
  • Understanding of culturally responsive curriculum development and feedback
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication
  • Flexible and adaptable work style
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, proactively manage multiple projects and priorities with concurrent and changing deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Strong proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as in internet research
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus
  • This position requires on-site presence 5 days a week
  • Per NYCDOE guidelines, this position is required to provide their fingerprints and information in order to undergo a background check and receive security clearance to enter NYC public schools and to work with students. This process must be completed within the first month of employment

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • 3+ years of arts education administrative experience or the equivalent combination of education, training, and transferable experience to successfully perform essential functions of the job.
  • Post-secondary degree preferred, but experience is the most important qualification.
