Purpose
Maximum 9-month seasonal duration. Benefit eligible. Group medical/dental/vision plan eligibility period is from the 1st of the month following start of seasonal work through the end of the month in which seasonal work ends. COBRA will be offered as an option during off season.
To outline essential duties, qualification requirements and working conditions for the seasonal position of Maintenance Worker I - Water.
Essential Job Duties
  • Supports the water crew as laborer and equipment operator.
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as a pick-up truck, compressor, excavator, backhoe, loader and safety equipment.
  • Performs excavation of holes and trenches up to 12 feet deep.
  • Installs and repairs water service lines, fire hydrants, fire lines, meters and meter chambers, water mains and main line valves.
  • Installs and maintains sewer lines and manholes.
  • Installs, cleans and repairs stormwater catch basins and manholes.
  • Works closely with contractors and engineers on water and sewer projects. Assists with meter installations and main line connections to the water system.
  • Removes and replaces asphalt or concrete in construction excavation of water mains or services.
  • Performs regularly scheduled maintenance tasks including main line valve exercising, line flushing, pressure regulating valve maintenance and meter repairs.
  • Performs traffic control around construction sites including assembly and set up of traffic control devices such as barricades, cones and flag stands.
  • Maintains a clean work environment. Performs clean up tasks throughout shift.

Other job functions:
  • Locates water and sewer utilities for construction activities, as requested.
  • May be temporarily assigned to other divisions as needed for support.
  • Perform related tasks as required.

Qualification Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of experience working for a water department, district or construction field including operation of heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Experience in the installation of water mains, fire hydrants and service lines preferred.
  • Must possess a current WA State Driver's License and maintain throughout employment.
  • Must obtain a Flagger Certification within 3-months of hire and maintain throughout employment.

  • The field of assignment sufficient to perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of responsibility as illustrated by example in this job description.
  • Materials used to perform duties including pipe types, fittings, valves and other items associated with water and sewer pipe (preferred).
  • Safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment and tools.
  • Safety and security hazards, precautions, standards, policies and procedures.

Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in field locations in all weather conditions and temperature extremes.
  • Possibility of exposure to raw sewage, microorganisms, toxic or unpleasant odors, dirt, dust, heavy equipment and traffic.
  • Noise levels range from quiet to very loud requiring ear protection.
  • May perform duties outside of normal hours. Travels by car or truck.

Requires the ability to:
  • Use appropriate safety equipment and follow safety policies, practices and procedures.
  • Frequently climb or balance, stoop, kneel, bend and twist at waist, crouch or crawl, and talk and hear with background noise.
  • Work in close quarters and confined spaces. Descend as far as 20 feet below ground level into manholes, vaults, tanks and excavations. Reach with hands and arms. Sit, stand, walk, bend over, twist at waist, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and ambulate up and down ladders and stairs.
  • Have good hand to eye coordination, and finger dexterity to handle, feel and/or operate objects, tools and controls.
  • Traverse varying terrain and obstacles such as pipes and ditches.
  • Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.

Group medical/dental/vision plan eligibility period is from the 1st of the month following start of seasonal work through the end of the month in which seasonal work ends. COBRA will be offered as an option during off season.
  • Vacation leave will be earned at a rate of 10-hours per month and will be available for use upon successful completion of the initial review period.
  • Sick leave will be earned at a rate of 8-hours per month.
  • 11-paid holidays per year plus 1-paid floating holiday.
  • Medical/Dental/Vision plans. We have two health plans to choose from: 1) High Deductible Health Plan (the City pays 100% of the employee premium); or 2) $250 deductible plan (the City pays 90% of the employee premium). The High Deductible Plan includes a City contribution to a Health Savings Account (HSA) in the amount of $125/month for the employee or $250/month for the employee with dependents. The City pays 75% of dependent premiums under either plan.
  • Membership in the WA State Public Employee Retirement System (PERS).
  • Optional participation in a Section 457 Deferred Comp Plan with a City match up to 2% of base pay.
  • $25,000 basic life/$25,000 AD&D insurance policy with premiums paid by the City on the employee's behalf.
