Job description

SCHEDULE Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM (40 hours / week)
some Saturdays and evenings depending on programming or events

SUMMARY *This position is a marketing and communication job at the Public Library. Works under the supervision of the Library Director and Librarians, and plays an integral role in the library’s team, to successfully communicate and implement public services, policies, procedures and programs in accordance with the library’s mission.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES* collaborates to prepare, prioritize and share library information through various platforms. Implements professional methods for communication such as media releases, print material, digital promotions (i.e. social media, website design, photography, audio/video creation and editing). Writing skills, editing abilities, social media and graphic design experience are requirements. In addition to Library marketing, video creation, editing, and other media work for the City of Bentonville are required.

Strong focus on marketing, communication, design, customer service, technology experience and team work. Requires attention to detail and proofreading skills. Requires the application of elementary principles of library and information sciences. A complete job description is available upon request.

Marketing Services

  • Responsible for all library communication about youth services, adult offerings, library news and announcements to publicize services and resources for in-library and community distribution.
  • Promotes the library's mission, services, programs and collections in order to encourage engagement and enhance patrons' use of the library; gives tours of the library.
  • Collaborates and communicates with several staff members, and library affiliates, to prepare, prioritize and share information through various platforms.
  • Writing skills, editing abilities, social media and graphic design experience are requirements. Must be willing to take direction and accept critical feedback on work.
  • Implements traditional methods for communication such as media releases to local outlets, print brochures, signage and flyers and develops newsletter content.
  • Implements digital methods for promotion such as social media, e-newsletters, website design and editing, online calendars, digital displays, photography, audio/video creation and editing.
  • Implements other methods for developing and sharing information such as attractive displays, patron guides, tech card information and special publications (i.e. annual reports, strategic plans, etc.)
  • Experience with design software and ability to learn and utilize the library's purchased platforms, web content management systems and other technologies.
  • Experience with Adobe products is preferred with ability to provide high-resolution print-ready files.
  • Serves as a library liaison to connect the library director and librarians with community-based organizations in order to develop partnership and outreach opportunities.
  • As required, attends meetings and takes minutes to foster communication between the library and other groups.
  • Develops content related to the library's short term and long term goals (i.e. fundraising and/or expansion).
  • As required, assists in developing and presenting programs and services to meet specific needs of library users of all ages such as special programs and workshops.
  • Incorporates national library campaigns (i.e. National Library Week) and national observances (i.e. Black History Month) into library initiatives.
  • Develops awareness of trends in library services and of issues affecting libraries.
  • In addition to Library marketing, video creation, editing, and other media work for the City of Bentonville are required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a four-year college in marketing or communications is preferred. Other degrees in related fields may be considered; or three (3) to five (5) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS* Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY* Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
