Job description

The IT Manager at the School of Engineering & Technology (SET) is responsible for managing and administering the Network and SET managed labs computing needs. These facilities are used by students, faculty, and staff to carry out the educational and research mission of the University. The School of Engineering & Technology has programs in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering providing a diversity of computing needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
80% - Maintain and Manage the Laboratory Computing Resources for Computing and Engineering Programs
  • Maintain computing and networking resources for computer science (BA/BS/MS/PhD/Grad Cert), information technology (BS, MS, MCL), computer engineering (BS/MS), electrical engineering (BS/MS), mechanical engineering (BS), civil engineering (BS).
  • Under constraints of academic goals, budget and university policy, plan for capacity, functionality, performance, security, reliability, availability, and interoperability to provide quality services in support of the academic needs of the curriculum.
  • Develop and establish policies for use of facilities and resources.
  • Specify, purchase, track, and allocate laboratory computer/networking assets.
  • Evaluate/develop software and hardware to improve management or operation of resources to keep up to date.
  • Coordinate with faculty plans, campus plans, and safety needs to safely deploy systems and achieve academic and institution goals.
  • Act as the school liaison with central UW IT & UW Tacoma IT.
    20% - Consult and assist with technology needs for faculty research, such as servers, virtual machines, cloud-services
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology, and at least 3 years of relevant experience to include experience with automation equipment repair/ maintenance, and at least one year of Windows Server or Linux system administration experience.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Experience of object-oriented programming and scripting languages.
  • Excellent communication skills for working with peers, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 3+ years' experience of combined Windows Server (with active directory) and Linux system planning and administrative experience.
  • Configuration and installation of network hardware software.
  • Database management system experience.
  • Experience creating and deploying system images.
  • Virtual machine configuration, deployment, and management.
  • Knowledge of Java and C++.
  • Knowledge of Perl.
  • Knowledge of application server installation, configuration and use.
  • Experience with security and privacy tools, techniques, and concerns.
  • Solid technical writing skills for recording work progress and internal documentation.
