Summary
King County's Finance and Business Operations Division, Business Development & Contract Compliance section, is seeking to fill multiple Graduate Intern positions!
Work Schedule: These positions are anticipated to start in June and will last through the 2024-2025 school year. Typically, our interns work full-time during the summer months and reduce to part time (10 to 20 hours) during the school year.
Pro-Equity Contracting Internship
This internship will work with businesses seeking certification as a small business, work with Contract Compliance specialists and others to complete special projects, review and analyze business data for compliance and certification renewals.
  • Maintain tangible and electronic records and files.
  • Receive, label, log, file, and retrieve financial and/or fiscal data.
  • Collect and/or analyze financial, accounting and/or fiscal documents such as personal net worth statements, tax records, revenue, profit /loss statements, etc.
  • Create correspondence to obtain any missing or supplemental information from a small business for certification.
  • Use online resources to confirm business information such as licenses, property values, ownership status, NAICS codes, etc.
  • Conduct outreach to businesses for small business certification, upcoming events, or information on King County procurements.
  • Respond to inquiries and/or refer customers to appropriate agencies or departments/divisions. Provide information from established policies, procedures, and other relevant sources to internal and/or external customers. Distribute incoming documents and process outgoing correspondence. Be comfortable in managing sensitive and/or potentially volatile situations.
  • Participate in outreach events, develop materials to conduct training to internal county agencies, and external agency partners, organizations, entities with audiences of small business owners, to support community engagement efforts to promote the program to increase the number of participating businesses in it.
  • Measure and track prospective businesses, applicants, and certified firms enrolled in the program.
LEAN Continuous Improvement InternshipThis internship will support the section's investment in and development of LEAN culture throughout the division. This role will have a direct impact on the work across the section to achieve process improvement results that will benefit the team and its customers.
  • Maintain and update standard work to be relevant, timely, and helpful for BDCC team members.
  • Analyzes website utilization, content, and customer needs and develops strategies to improve outcomes.
  • Create materials to educate and inform the section about Lean culture, thinking, practices, events, etc., through various modes.
  • Collaborates with BDCC manager and supervisors to create and execute a plan to maintain a stream of section Lean continuous improvement success stories to motivate, engage, and inspire the team.
  • Review the section's catalog of ideas, including creating an online inventory of team ideas for BDCC's continuous improvement efforts.
  • Work with the BDCC manager and supervisors to communicate program operations standard work, procedures, process improvements, and practices.
  • Manage repository of team ideas for monthly goal review.
  • Create visual aids (i.e., graphs, charts) for data and metrics to assist team members in implementing ideas for process improvement.
  • Coordinate data compilation and reporting for monthly updates on the progress of ideas for implementation.
  • Design, create, and update a Lean Transformation Ideas dashboard to display and keep up to date with all program measures and status, ensuring visual management is up to date.
  • Develop presentation materials and graphics to represent the process improvement initiatives effectively and "just do it" ideas.
Contracts Data Analysis InternshipThis internship will work with county project managers, contractors, and others to support contract monitoring and compliance activities for the Diversity Compliance Management System. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel is necessary.
  • Perform routine system administration, maintenance, and documentation. Participate in audit preparation and maintain data integrity.
  • Track, troubleshoot, and resolve system problems and issues of limited scope following established guidelines and standard work and procedures.
  • Participate in gathering data and preparing analysis.
  • Participate in preparing in researching requirements and maintaining tables and records.
  • Update standard work processes and operating procedures.
  • Communicate routinely with customers; provide information and assistance on routine questions involving system processes and procedures to navigate an online reporting database.
  • Update standard queries following established procedures. Develop routine reports, document tables, and data used in the preparation of reports and queries.
  • Participate in process improvement as a team member supporting reporting systems. Work in partnership with experienced functional analysts to test system interfaces and enhancements.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program in public administration, business administration or other related fields;
  • Have passion for equity and social justice;
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively, solve problems analytically, work independently, collaborate effectively within a team, and build strong relationships;
  • Willingness to question the status quo and create new processes;
  • Have an interest in and understanding of the public sector and are responsible in a professional environment;
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, writing and customer service skills;
  • Intermediate level of technology proficiency using MS Office Productivity tools in your daily work;
  • Ability to manage your time and adapt to changing priorities, work on multiple priorities and projects simultaneously, meet quick deadlines, and produce timely and quality work products;
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

Position Information:
  • Work Site Details: The work associated with this position will primarily be hybrid with some in person activities as needed.
  • Location Requirement: Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
  • Work Schedule: This position is Non-Exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and therefore is overtime eligible. Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule, every other Thursday. Typically, our interns work full-time during the summer months and reduce to part time (10-20 hours) during the school year.
  • Union Representation: This position is not represented.

Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop. When working remotely employees must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work, remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours, and following FBOD's Hybrid and Remote Guidelines including on-camera participation during virtual video meetings. King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely.
