Incentive Opportunities:
6.5% COLA - July 1, 2024 & 6% COLA - July 1, 2025- Paramedic Pay – 12.5% (top step of FF base pay, if assigned to Paramedic Program)
- Education Incentive –5% (upon completion of AA or AS Degree in Fire Science or related public safety field)
- Haz-Mat Pay – 5% (if selected to participate/based on operational need)
- Bilingual Pay – 2% (of base pay)
- Pay for Performance –3% (project-based)
- Administrative Assignment Pay – 7.5% (if suppression employee assigned to administrative assignment)
DESCRIPTION
Firefighters operate and maintain a variety of South San Joaquin County Fire Authority (Authority) firefighting equipment; respond to fire alarms and other emergencies; protect lives and property; participate in fire prevention, fire investigation, public education, station and equipment maintenance, and other related assigned duties.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Firefighters are distinguished from other positions in the Authority by their sole focus on training, practicing, and executing general duty firefighting responsibilities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Works under the general supervision of the Fire Captain. May assist, coordinate, instruct, or supervise the work of reserve and other fire personnel as assigned
Essential and Marginal Duties
This is an illustrative list, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Actively promote the Authority’s focus on effective and respectful communications to build better work relationships at all levels in the organization.
- Apply principles and practices of modern firefighting techniques and perform firefighting and other emergency activities as directed.
- Use proper safety techniques in the operation and maintenance of Authority equipment, tools, and facilities.
- Follow and apply Authority policies, rules, regulations, and guidelines.
- Apply EMT-D protocols, CPR, and other medical assistance techniques.
- Use effective communication skills, both oral and written; follow directions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Attend drills and staff training activities; participate in Authority activities.
- Respond to alarms; maintain awareness of area streets, special hazards, and water systems.
- Establish and maintain effective training and readiness.
- Assist in minor maintenance to keep the areas in and about the firehouse clean and orderly.
- Clean and service firefighting and medical equipment; inspect and test medical equipment.
- Provide community service.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Dental and Vision Plans - Choice of Delta Dental or Bright Now Dental plans available. VSP is available as a Vision plan.
Life Insurance and Long Term Disability - Individual coverage of $50,000 is fully paid by the SSCJFA. Supplemental life insurance may be purchased by the employee at the same premium rate paid by the City. In lieu of SDI, the City pays LTD and LTC.
Retirement Program - CalPERS - Employees hired by the South San Joaquin County Fire Authority "the Authority" on or after January 1, 2022 receive the following retirement formula - 2.7% @ 57 (average of highest years). Voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation programs available (ICMA-RC & VALIC). Public Safety does not participate in Social Security.
Vacation - (56 hour work week) - General vacation accrues at the rate of 12 hours per month the first year and progresses up to 24 hours per month at 16 years of service. For 20+ years, one (1) additional hour is added per month for each additional year of service. (40 hour work week) - General vacation accrues at a rate of 96 hours per year the first year and progresses up to 192 hours per year at 16 years of service. For 20+ years, eight (8) additional hours per year are added for each year of service.
Sick Leave- (56 hour work week) - Sick leave is accrued at 24 hours per month with unlimited accrual. (40 hour work week) - Sick leave is accrued at a rate of 96 hours per year with unlimited accrual.
Holidays - (56 hour work week) - Employees receive Holiday in-lieu pay. (40 hour work week) - There are 14 paid holidays per year (includes 2 floating holidays).
Uniform Allowance - Employees receive a fixed uniform allowance in the amount of $915 per year.
Dependent Care and Medical Spending Accounts - (IRS Section 125): Available to eligible employees on a voluntary basis.
