The Pasadena Fire Department (PFD) is looking for dedicated and ambitious individuals who are committed to protecting and serving our vibrant, beautiful and diverse community. The Firefighter Paramedic (Lateral) is a non-trainee position and performs the full range of fire safety activities.
The mission of the PFD is to provide protection of life, property, and the environment from the effects of fires, medical emergencies, and hazards. The ideal candidates have the ability to embody accountability, integrity, and flexibility. Our city is small enough to provide a hometown feeling, yet large enough to offer engaging and varied work experiences. PFD has a Class 1 Public Protection Classification rating from the Insurance Services Office. Working with top-notch colleagues you will be mentored, coached and trained by the best.
Pasadena offers a competitive compensation package as well as a 48/96 work schedule. Lateral Firefighter Paramedics are offered a starting salary of step 4, currently $49.56 hourly. Lateral Firefighter Paramedic recruits will receive a lump sum payment of $2,500 upon the successful completion of one month of work as a Pasadena Firefighter Paramedic, $2,500 upon the successful completion of six months of work as a Pasadena Firefighter Paramedics and $3,000 upon the successful completion of the probationary period. Additionally, Lateral Firefighter Paramedics receive an initial bank of forty-eight (48) hours of sick leave upon hire. Employees may be eligible for a variety of benefits including Section 125 medical/dependent care accounts, Bilingual Pay, Tuition Reimbursement, and Educational Incentive Pay.

Essential Functions
The Major responsibilities of this position are listed below. For more detailed information, please review the
1. Performs the full range of fire safety activities, including: lay hose; set up ladders; operate fire department equipment.
2. Conducts rescue and salvage work.
3. Administers first aid and assists in medical care to the sick and injured.
4. Performs basic fire prevention and code enforcement duties, including life safety inspections.
5. Performs support and maintenance activities such as servicing fire hydrants, fire equipment maintenance and repair.
6. Keeps abreast of current firefighting methods and operations, city geography, and departmental policies and procedures.
7. Conducts public education and information activities including assisting in the preparation and dissemination of informational materials and making public presentations.
8. Performs fire apparatus repair and maintenance.
9. Performs all functions of a paramedic, as necessary.
10. May be required to accept a 40 - hour administrative assignment on a temporary basis.
11. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualification Guidelines
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Qualifications
  • Candidate must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be off probation and working full-time as a paid Firefighter Paramedic with a public municipal fire agency that is comparable to the Pasadena Fire Department (Suburban, urban, or metropolitan with a service-area population greater than 10,000) as identified by NFPA and CPSE standards.
  • Must possess a current California or National Registry Paramedic Certificate.
  • Must have successfully completed a California State Fire Marshal Fire Fighter I academy (or equivalent training program) and have a California Fire Fighter I certification by April 1, 2024.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of full-time experience as a Firefighter Paramedic in a comparable agency
  • Possess a current California Paramedic certificate
  • AA/AS Degree in fire science or closely related field
  • Possession of a California State Fire Marshal Fire Fighter II certification
SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process may consist of a training and experience evaluation, a performance examination of EMT Paramedic skills, a structured interview, a Functional Movement Screen (FMS) process, and a thorough background investigation. An examination will be scheduled based on the staffing needs of the Pasadena Fire Department. The probationary work period is one year. This position is part of the Pasadena Fire Fighters Association, Local 809.
Special Requirements
The following documents are required and must be attached and submitted with your online application:
  1. California State Fire Marshal Fire Fighter I certification.
  2. A current and valid National Registry and/or California State Paramedic (EMT-P) License.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
  • Must possess a California State Fire Marshal Fire Fighter II certification OR fulfill the California State Fire Marshal Fire Fighter II requirements within twelve months of employment.
  • Must obtain a Los Angeles County certification/accreditation for Paramedic by the end of the academy.
Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License within ten (10) days of start date.
Effective January 1, 2013, new Safety members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS' reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2.7% @ 57 benefit formula.
Employees who are current Safety members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS' reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 3% @ 55 benefit formula.
