Description
Apple Valley Fire is looking for Paramedics interested in attending a Fire Academy.
Trainees will be paid during their attendance at the Fall Fire Academy at Victor Valley College.
Under the direct guidance of the Battalion Chief, this role is designated as a trainee-level classification. It is specifically designed for individuals undergoing initial training in the fire academy. Firefighter Trainees undergo comprehensive training in firefighting, emergency medical services, equipment operation, rescue techniques, documentation, policies and procedures, and physical fitness. Additionally, teamwork, self-confidence, self-discipline, quick thinking, and the ability to follow instructions and orders accurately are emphasized in the academy. Upon the successful fulfillment of the fire academy and ICEMA requirements, individuals become eligible for a probationary appointment to the position of Firefighter/Paramedic.
Firefighter/Paramedic annual salary is 87,533.00 to 105,986 which includes paramedic pay, holiday pay, uniform pay and FLSA pay.
Examples of Duties

• Participates in the academy through engagement in classroom training, manipulative exercises, and drills.
• Demonstrates the ability to safely utilize tools and equipment, effectively communicate both orally and in writing, understand written and verbal instructions, maintain emotional stability in high-stress situations, and endure sustained periods of rigorous physical activity.
• Observes and engages with fire personnel during firefighting and emergency medical service activities.
• Undertakes additional duties as assigned.
• Trainee must complete the fire academy and receive a Firefighter I Academy Graduation Certificate and obtain certification by the Office of the State Fire Marshal and must meet all other State Fire Marshal requirements.

Typical Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
California OSFM current Rope Rescue curriculum certification or equivalent. Certification must be obtained within first year of appointment.
Current valid ICEMA EMT-P accreditation by date of appointment. ICEMA accreditation includes California State paramedic license & ACLS certification.
Valid California Class C Driver's License with Firefighter Endorsement within one year of hire.
Successful Completion of OSFM Firefighter I Academy or Apple Valley Fire Protection District Tower within trainee period.
Valid California Class C Driver's License.
For outside recruitment successful completion of either a Biddle certification or CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) certification within 12 months of hire.
Residence within 40 miles of Apple Valley Fire Headquarters Fire Station. This requirement may be modified by the Fire Chief or as deemed in the best interest of the District.

SELECTION PROCEDURE
Applications, résumés, and related documents will be reviewed. The most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the selection process, which may include a written examination, practical assessment, and interview process. The Fire Chief will make the appointments.
MEDICAL EXAMINATION:
Prior to appointment, candidates must pass a rigid medical examination, psych evaluation and drug screening test.
IMMIGRATION LAW:
Prior to appointment, candidates will be required to provide necessary documentation to verify proof of legal residence entitling them to work in the United States.
BACKGROUND:
Prior to appointment, candidates must undergo a comprehensive background investigation including, but not limited to, driving and criminal records.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
All employees must satisfactorily complete a one-year probationary period.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT:
All safety equipment is furnished by the District with the exception of black work boots, which must be purchased by the employee.

• Cafeteria Plan: Employees may select from a cafeteria plan ofmedical, dental, and vision insurance offered by the District. Along with the CalPERS required 2024 contribution of $157 per month towards a CalPERS selected health plan, the District also provides a tiered supplemental benefit contribution of $600 for a single person; $950 for two people and $1,400 for a family to use for health premium and/or selections of dental and/or vision coverage.
• Safety retirement is provided by Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS).
  • Classic Retirement Formula is 2% @ 55. Employee portion towards retirement is 7%
  • PEPRA Retirement Formula is 2% @ 57. Current employee portion towards retirement is 11.75%

Life Insurance: The District provides life insurance for the employee equal to 100% of annual salary.

To offset CalPERS Tier 2 and Tier 3 CalPERS benefit levels, the District offers a two to one matching benefit up to $3,000 annually via 457b plan.
