About the Position

The Financial Aid Counselor is a Professional Staff position that provides Financial Aid counseling services and may be assigned liaison work with other offices on campus, special projects and/or support for Private Educational Loan and Alaska Loan processing and certification.

Duties/Responsibilities include counseling to students, parents, faculty, high school counselors and others regarding Financial Aid application procedures, eligibility, student budget development and financial literacy. Responsible for reviewing files, awarding Financial Aid, making Financial Aid presentations, counseling students on a drop-in or appointment basis and making informed and well-documented professional judgment decisions. Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of Financial Aid regulatory requirements and institutional policies and procedures. Provides customer service support for the FASC center, serving as an information resource for students, parents and staff. May be assigned liaison work with other areas on campus or special projects based on operational necessity and individual experience and skills, including support for Private Educational Loan and Alaska Loan processing and certification.

Specialized duties may be offered, based on previous Financial Aid experience and demonstrated potential to complete specialized duties, which will result in an offer of Financial Aid Counselor 2 or 3 level position. Examples include:

  • Oversight of Private Educational Loan and Alaska Loan Programs
  • Support for Return of Aid Calculations
  • Support for Federal Pell Grant Administration
  • Support for Administration of Student Employment Programs
  • Support for Administration of Scholarship Programs
  • Support for Administration of Financial Aid support for Special Populations
  • Oversight, Training and Completion of Federal, State and Institutional Return of Aid Calculations and Related Processing
  • Oversight and Training of the Federal Pell Grant Program and Related Processes
  • Systems Support for Financial Aid Regulatory Compliance
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Demonstrated excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently organize and prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work independently within a highly computerized environment
  • Demonstrated public speaking experience
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively provide services to diverse populations
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain, analyze and evaluate data
  • Demonstrated ability to apply and adhere to complex regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute positively to a team-oriented environment
  • For level 2 appointment, candidates must demonstrate at least two years of experience as a Financial Aid Counselor or Financial Aid administrator for an institution of higher education or equivalent experience
  • For level 3 appointment, candidates must demonstrate at least three years of experience as a Financial Aid Counselor or Financial Aid administrator for an institution of higher education or equivalent experience
Preferred Qualifications
  • For Level 1 appointment, minimum one year of student Financial Aid office experience
  • For level 2 appointment, experience working with private educational loan, return of aid calculations, and/or Pell Grant administration OR experience with student scholarships or student employment
  • For level 3 appointment, higher level experience working with return of aid calculations, and/or Pell Grant administration 
  • Experience using Ellucian Banner Financial Aid software
  • Experience working with document imaging software
  • Fluency in the Spanish language strongly preferred

For candidates qualified as Financial Aid Counselor 1: Starting range: $48,779 to $54,633, salary tops out at $62,438
For candidates qualified as Financial Aid Counselor 2: Starting range: $53,779 to $60,233, salary tops out at $68,838
For candidates qualified as Financial Aid Counselor 3: Starting range: $59,292 to $66,407, salary tops out at $75,893
