The City of Burlington Stormwater Division is looking to grow our public education and outreach program with an Environmental Education and Outreach Coordinator. Reporting to the Stormwater Manager, the right candidate for this position will bring enthusiasm for water quality education to share with students and adults of all ages. The person for this position will help us to develop and implement a dynamic K-adult Environmental Education program including topics which relate to stormwater management and the environment.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a K-Adult education program supporting the City of Burlington Stormwater Division.
o Partner with schools and clubs on environmental projects that have a water quality component.
o Build and maintain professional relationships with teachers in the community who can help further water quality education amongst students (train the teacher programs).
o Facilitate lessons for elementary, middle, and high school science and environmental classes.
o Develop a menu of educational activities that correlates to school curriculum.
- Develop and implement a public education and outreach program supporting the City of Burlington Stormwater Division.
o Provide public outreach and education at community events such as fairs and festivals.
o Coordinate, plan, and facilitate environmental camp programs.
o Partner with schools and clubs on environmental projects that have a water quality component.
o Partner with community members for environmental volunteer opportunities.
- Represent the City of Burlington Stormwater Division at Stormwater SMART meetings.
- Identify and develop partnerships with other local, regional, state, or national organizations to further expand environmental programming related to stormwater.
- Assist in the creation and execution of marketing and public outreach programs aimed at increasing public awareness of stormwater issues.
o Assist with website content management.
o Provide graphic design assistance for digital and print campaigns.
o Assist with division photography and videography efforts.
o Assist in the development of internal communications campaigns to increase employee engagement in Burlington's Stormwater Division.
Minimum Education and Experience Required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- A degree in Education, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Environmental Studies/Science, or related field.
- 2+ years experience in education and outreach, marketing, communications, public relations, or environmental studies/science related field.
- 2+ years developing programs and curriculum for the K-12 environment or equivalent.
- Proficiency in Adobe and Microsoft Office
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina
- Understanding of stormwater and other environmental policies, issues, and science.
- Understanding of regional environmental and conservation landscape.
- Excellent communication, both written and verbal, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work individually and independently.
- General knowledge of stormwater regulations at the local, state, and national level. General computer skills necessary to prepare reports, complete forms, and read maps. Some knowledge of GIS and its capabilities.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, other water resources and city employees. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public and city employees.
