Position Summary:

The Community Engagement Specialist implements the engagement strategies for JANM’s Discover Nikkei project in order to expand its global Nikkei network and promote the project’s content and initiatives. This position is responsible for social media postings, including assisting with the development of social media campaigns; ensuring that the content on DiscoverNikkei.org is current, relevant, and useful to the site’s target audiences; assisting with project programming; following up with inquiries; and assisting with site moderation. This position requires someone to be both fluent in English and either Spanish and/or Portuguese.

This is a temporary, full-time position from April 8, 2024 to March 31, 2025, with a possible extension. Set weekly hours are required, but with some flexibility in scheduling.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for social media posts on all platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, etc), including scheduling daily posts, monitoring & moderating conversations, and encouraging users to participate the site activities and programs. Provide regular reports with engagement metrics.

  • Develop plans and implement social media/content strategy and campaigns to raise awareness of the project and its special initiatives/programs, and to expand its global Nikkei network by working closely with the team, other departments, and consulting firms, when available.

  • Expand the project’s global network by identifying and contacting Nikkei and other individuals and organizations, focusing especially in Latin American countries, about contributing/participating, supporting, and promoting Discover Nikkei and its initiatives. Works with the team to strategize, contact, and follow up on potential partnerships, collaborations, and sponsorships for the project. This may include virtual and in-person meetings and presentations.

  • Coordinate the site’s curated content, with an emphasis on increasing content in Spanish and Portuguese; assist with the scheduling and uploading of daily articles and other curated content; recruit new contributors; and coordinate volunteer writing and translating assignments.

  • Monitors and responds to general inquiries and requests received by the project via email and other channels.

  • Work with the team and others to develop promotional and other materials, including mass outreach emails, event descriptions, announcements, flyers, articles, summaries, FAQs, general instructions, and reports as needed.

  • Assist the team in planning and coordinating virtual and in-person events.

  • Provides support for users and potential users and monitors/moderates user-generated content/comments. Assists with site development by helping with testing and providing feedback.

  • Staff members must be able to work with visitors of all ages to support the various events sponsored by JANM. Each staff member will be expected to work on a minimum of three museum-wide events per year:

    • JANM’s Benefit and Online Auction—(off-site) typically held in the Spring (April-May)
    • Oshogatsu Family Festival (first Sunday in January)
    • Natsumatsuri Family Festival (Saturday in August)

This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Incumbent will perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Qualification Requirements

Education

Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience/Knowledge

At least 3 years working in marketing or managing a relationship with a niche community. Must have a thorough understanding of social media management and strategy. Demonstrable social networking experience and social analytics tools knowledge. Professional writing and editing experience in English and Spanish and/or Portuguese. Experience with using a CMS to add content to a website and moderating comments. Knowledge or interest in the international Nikkei diaspora, particularly of Nikkei communities, histories, and cultures in the Americas. Journalism experience in issues of ethnicity, cultural diversity, or community; experience working in/with Nikkei organizations in Latin America; Japanese language fluency; and experience with video editing are a plus.

Proven ability to prioritize and multitask efficiently. Willingness to learn and apply new skills. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Ability to work well under pressure to meet deadlines. Excellent organizational skills and be detail oriented. Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment, be a self-starter. Demonstrated commitment and flexibility in order to ensure a high level of quality service. Ability to adjust and provide appropriate action when unanticipated need arises.

Communication

Must have excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills in English and Spanish and/or Portuguese language. Strong oral and interpersonal skills. Proficiency writing and editing copy for websites, social media posts, marketing/promotional copy, and related print and electronic materials. Experience creating instructional text, style guides, and procedural manuals.

Ability to work as part of a diverse team. Ability to communicate effectively with technical, academic, creative, and administrative people, and to communicate complex concepts to general audiences. Ability to represent the Discover Nikkei project in one-on-one, small group, and large group formats. Bilingual fluency in English/Spanish or English/Portuguese is required.

Computer

Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and Internet and web tools. Knowledge of social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube; and outreach emails platforms, such as Constant Contact. Experience uploading content using a content management system (CMS); familiarity with common Web browsers and widely used file formats for text, graphics, and data. Experience with web analytics such as Google Analytics. Ability to write and edit basic HTML; experience with a graphic editor or web graphic tools such as Adobe Photoshop. Desired: familiarity with video editing software. Experience with Google Suite, MS Office, Slack, Asana, and SurveyMonkey preferred.

Math

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning

Ability to act on own initiative, making consistently sound decisions. Must be able to comply with institutional policies and procedures. Perform successfully when juggling and re-prioritizing multiple assignments in a fast-paced, changing work environment. Is able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Reliable follow-through on assigned projects in a complete, well conceived, and timely manner.

Hybrid option for remote work up to 2 days per week, based upon current policy. Occasional overtime may be required on weekends and evenings to support museum programs.


The Discover Nikkei Community Engagement Specialist is a temporary, full-time position. Please note, however, that this is an at-will position, meaning that your employment may be terminated at any time, with or without notice, and with or without cause. There is, in other words, no guarantee that you will be employed until any date in the future, including March 31, 2025.
