THE POSITION The Community Engagement Specialist is an ambassador in the community, representing Building Futures and its work to donors, businesses, Chambers of Commerce, faith and community groups. The position oversees the agency’s volunteer and in-kind donation programs and supports the agency’s communications and data management. The Community Engagement Specialist is a member of Building Futures’ three-person Development team, which also benefits from a contracted writer and a contracted graphic designer. This position is supervised by the Development Director. Building Futures has offices/sites in the cities of Alameda, Oakland and San Leandro. The Community Engagement Specialist is based onsite at the agency’s San Leandro office.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Serve as one of Building Futures’ ambassadors in the community, coordinating the agency’s community relations and garnering resources
  • Regular responsibilities include the planning, coordination, and creation of engaging content developed for direct channels. Types of content may include editorial copy, photography, video, and digital campaign deliverables
  • Collaborate with the agency’s fund development team on communications, outreach, and resource-garnering activities
  • Manage direct marketing initiatives through a variety of marketing activities, including digital content development for web, social media, email campaigns and multi-channel digital advertising
  • Work closely with program staff and colleagues across departments to determine need
  • Recruit, respond, follow up, document, and supervise volunteers
  • Execute outreach, response, follow up, and documentation relating to in-kind donated items and services campaigns, including Move-In Kit Drive and the Holiday Gift Drive.
  • Provide administrative support for Building Futures’ donor database. Collaborate as needed on donor acknowledgements and documentation
  • Support event planning, logistics, and execution such as our annual gala event as well as various smaller events throughout the year
  • Work with the agency’s accounting department to reconcile received donations
  • Other job-related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Interest in ensuring that Alameda County residents have access to the services they need to build brighter futures
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; knowledge, and skills relevant to the position
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills appropriate for a range of audiences
  • Comfort and fluency with email marketing and social media
  • Demonstrated aptitude learning new software tools quickly. Experience with Excel, MS Teams, Constant Contact, Canva, Google Suite. Salesforce (or similar donor CRM database experience) is a big plus
  • At least 3 years’ relevant office experience
  • Ability to present data to report on trends and speak persuasively
  • Skilled at engaging and motivating volunteers and other community members
  • Skill at juggling projects and deadlines
  • Ability to serve as an enthusiastic colleague in a diverse environment
  • Gift for initiative, with a positive attitude
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Valid driver’s license, car insurance, and access to a personal vehicle (to attend events and meetings and pick up item donations)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The work environment and physical demands described are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to work at a desk or computer workstation; ergonomic desk is provided
  • Ability to review/analyze a wide variety of materials in electronic or hard copy form
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to operate a personal computer, phone, and related equipment; and to operate a motor vehicle safely
  • Able to safely lift up to 25 pounds, move, or maneuver in whatever way may be necessary to perform position duties
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend hours for events in and around Alameda County
  • Position is based onsite in Building Futures’ San Leandro office
