Job description

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is the preeminent global non-profit organization providing an independent source of technical and policy expertise on clean transportation. Our mission is to improve the environmental performance and energy efficiency of road, marine, and air transportation, in order to benefit public health and mitigate climate change. Join our team of more than 140 talented researchers and operations staff with offices in Washington D.C., San Francisco, Berlin, Beijing, and São Paulo.
We are looking for a Director of Development to lead our global development efforts during a phase of rapid growth at a critical time in the fight against climate change. The Director of Development is responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding philanthropic contributions in support of the mission and activities of the ICCT. This position manages ICCT's expanding funding pipeline and proposal efforts. ICCT currently raises many multi-million dollar grants annually from foundations and government agencies. The Director of Development will oversee these efforts while enhancing our efforts to renew and deepen our relationships with funders. The Director of Development supervises the development team, works closely with the leadership team, and promotes a culture of philanthropy in ICCT. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, and in close collaboration with the Executive Director and wider senior leadership, the Director of Development articulates the organization's long-term overall development vision and strategy. Working with regional and program teams, the Director of Development and their team develop, implement, and evaluate strategic development plans in pursuit of strong funding partnerships that enable the impactful work of the ICCT.
You Have:

  • 10 years in development and/or fundraising, including at least 5 years of leadership experience.
  • Experience designing and implementing strategies, as well as development systems and processes.
  • Experience expanding relationships with funding partners and building new funder relationships.
  • Superior communication and writing skills.
  • Substantial background in environmental policy issues generally, and transportation and climate-related policy in particular, is desirable.
  • Analytical mindset, with ability to use data to influence internally and externally, and the ability to craft technical proposals.
  • Experience working in a international organization across multiple cultures and time zones.

You Will:
  • Establish the strategic and operational framework for ICCT's organizational development efforts;
  • Manage a development team of five people dispersed among ICCT's offices and operating regions, with the opportunity to grow and shape the team and ensure its cohesion and effectiveness;
  • Maintain and deepen relationships with current funders, while proactively identifying future funding opportunities, diversifying funding streams, and building new relationships for ICCT;
  • Work with the Executive Director and Deputy Director to personally manage the most vital funder relationships;
  • Oversee ICCT's Grants Management function;
  • Collaborate with colleagues across ICCT to identify and support funding efforts, including proposal writing, technical conversations, and illustrate the work of the ICCT;
  • Partner with the Director of Communications to conceptualize and execute strategies that support and strengthen ICCT's brand identity, narrative, and overall communications and public relations;
  • Lead efforts to monitor and evaluate ICCT's impact to demonstrate value to donors;
  • Support budget planning and reporting and help to align funding opportunities with the ICCT's organizational strategy and priorities;
  • Work with the management team and fellow senior staff to make key decisions about the overall direction and structure of the organization;
  • Ensure ICCT staff members understand the organization's development priorities, the interests of current and prospective funders, and how their work. Specifically supports and relates to those priorities and interests.

This full-time position will ideally be based in either the Washington DC area or San Francisco Bay Area. ICCT has flexible working policies that will enable a hybrid home and office working arrangement. The salary for this position is $176,000 USD with potential market supplements for Bay Area candidates.
We offer an excellent benefits package, including hybrid/remote flexibilities, four weeks paid vacation, retirement contribution with generous 7% employer contribution, transportation subsidies, employer-paid health insurance, and other benefits.
The deadline for applications is Friday, June 2nd at Midnight EDT.
