A Communications Officer's primary responsibilities as a first responder are to efficiently multi-task using a number of technologies such as answering emergency 911 and business phone calls, enter and update calls for service in a computer aided dispatch system and transmit and receive radio communications from field personnel (troopers, park rangers, wildlife agents and more). These critical responsibilities are the lifeline for officers in the field and the first contact with the public who report emergency situations requiring police, fire, or medical response. To join the WSP Communications team, you must be a high school graduate or have a GED equivalent, be able to successfully pass a background check, polygraph, psychological, and hearing exam, be able to multi-task, work shift work and extended hours, distinguish colors, effectively communicate orally and in writing, have adequate hearing and visual acuity, pay close attention to detail and have good dexterity in hands to operate standard office equipment, including a computer keyboard.
