Responsibilities

Valle Vista Health System is a 132-bed, acute care psychiatric hospital located in the beautiful community of Greenwood, IN.  Valle Vista Health System features individual units for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors, and offers inpatient acute care, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient programs.  On average, over 10,000 patients receive care from our compassionate health care team each year at Valle Vista Health System.  Valle Vista Health System is proud to be a teaching facility that supports local nursing students through our dedicated and tenured nursing team.

 

We are very proud to offer a Psychiatric Nurse Residency Program for our newly licensed nurses.  This program reviews and discusses important concepts integral to patient safety in the behavioral health setting and helps the new nurse understand how to apply nursing knowledge, learn new skills, and think critically.  More specifically, this program will assist the newly licensed nurse to transition to a confident professional with knowledge, skills, and competence in the psychiatric behavioral health nursing arena.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing’s (NCSBN) has provided evidence that demonstrates this transition program increases new nurse competence, satisfaction and retention and decrease stress and self-reported errors.  The course content is evidence-based and aimed at strengthening core competencies considered foundational to Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Clinical Charge Nurse Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily nursing operations on the assigned unit or units. She/He coordinates nursing efforts to ensure that effective patient care is being provided and that quality standards and regulatory standards are being met.  She/He will provide leadership and guidance to other nurses and ensure that staff is properly trained.  She/He will address any personnel issues to promote a productive and supportive work environment. She/He participates in Process Improvement activities and measures the effectiveness of processes implemented.  She/He will collaborate with the executive leadership team, interdisciplinary teams and other stakeholders in order to develop implement and evaluate programs and services. 

 

The Clinical Charge Nurse Manager is responsible for providing feedback and mentoring of staff, developing education programs, contributing to staff professional development, interviewing and hiring nurses and other licensed and unlicensed personnel providing care on the unit.  She/He will apply evidence-based healthcare practices and nursing standards. She/He will conduct performance evaluations of staff and give feedback to staff on their performance on a regular basis and per facility policy.

 

The Clinical Charge Nurse Manager is fiscally responsible to the budget. She/He will monitor the use of staff, services and facilities to maximize efficiency, as well as compliance with state and federal guidelines.  She/He will authorize expenditures for supplies, equipment and services as assigned.  She/He will analyze data for use in strategic planning for the departments and facility in conjunction with the Chief Nursing Officer and others in executive leadership. 

 

The Clinical Charge Nurse Manager ensures admitting and discharge functions facilitate optimal patient flow and ensures that hospital resources are being used in the most efficient manner. She/He participates in the process of maintaining medical stability for patients. 

 

The Clinical Charge Nurse Manager participates in the Nursing Clinical Call/Coverage rotation and will assist in providing coverage for Nursing Leadership.

 

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSBILITIES

  • Provides for the scheduling and staffing of the unit/s to provide patient care.
  • Ensures that Medical Care Plans are completed according to policy, including treatment plans, documentation on treatment plans and treatment plan updates. 
  • Intervenes with potential patient AMA’s and facilitates resolution of patient complaints/patient ambassador issues.
  • Ensures the Critical Values are logged, documented and notified according to policy.
  • Communicates patient medical needs to the medical provider and ensures that follow-up is completed as indicated.
  • Provides assistance to other RNs with medication administration as needed.
  • Monitors RN compliance with Medication Administration policy and procedures.
  • Ensures that RNs are completing daily face-to-face physical and mental assessments of patients; assists the RN as needed.
  • Provides education to patients regarding their medical needs as indicated. 
  • Ensures graphics are completed, reviewed, and acted upon daily as indicated including patient vital signs, COWS and CIWA scales.
  • Monitors, and as needed, ensures History and Physicals are completed on all patients withing 24 hours of admission. Provides assistance to providers as indicated.
  • Ensures that Physician/NP orders for lab/x-ray are acted upon and reported within policy and procedure timelines.
  • Ensures Restraint/Seclusion documentation is completed according to policy.
  • Reviews and signs HPR’s 

             

GENERAL PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  • Completes mandatory in-services annually and as assigned.
  • Maintains professional licensure/certification, if required.
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities, if required.
  • Attends and participates in monthly departmental meetings.
  • Accepts direction and adheres to departmental procedures.
  • Accepts direction and adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to hospital policies concerning conduct and dress.
  • Maintains confidentiality of facility patients.
  • Adheres to hospital policy concerning attendance and tardiness.

SUPERVISORY PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

 

  • Consistently and objectively intervenes with staff to correct employee performance that does not meet expectations using coaching.
  • Functions as a resource to unit staff and other hospital staff on clinical unit issues as needed.
  • Participates in hospital-wide performance improvement activites as indicated.

    

 

 

 


Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education: Graduate from an accredited Registered Nurse program required; Bachelor's Degree preferred.  

Licensure: Currently licensed to practice by the Indiana State Board of Nursing.  Current CPR or BLS certification. 

Experience:  A minimum of two (2) years experience as an RN required; two (2) years experience in a psychiatric hospital setting or related professional setting preferred.  Experience in supervision preferred.
