Position Description

    • Position Summary

    • (Classified as: Student Services Professional III)
      Full-time position available on or after October 30, 2023, for Student Services.


      Under the guidance of the Executive Director, the Career Coach provides career-related counseling on an individual or small group basis to students and alumni. The Career Coach will provide career development and career guidance to students in a variety of settings and performs independent professional work characterized by coordination of employer, faculty and campus outreach and partnerships. The Career Coach will act as the liaison between students and employers, and will provide career information, and skills training to students in support of the CPDC and CareerReadyU (CRU) initiative. Builds collaborative partnerships with campus, employers, and community constituents to foster access, student engagement, career readiness, retention, and commitment to student success. Prepares students for finding suitable employment by enhancing career-readiness, job search skills and capacity to express the relevance of their strengths. Provide leadership and guidance to Career Peers and College Corps Fellows in tabling and outreach.

    • Job Duties
    • Duties include but are not limited to:
      • Provide workshops and presentations to academic partners from assigned colleges, related academic clubs, and relevant professional/community organizations.
      • Post jobs and internships directly in HireStanState powered by Handshake.
      • Maintains communication with academic component related to both Turlock and Stockton Centers services and activities as needed.
      • Provide consultation to college departments on career and employment-related issues, job market trends and information on CPDC services and CareerReadyU program.
      • Disseminate information to academic and other administrative offices on campus related to the programs and services of the CPDC and CRU initiative.
      • Develop and create instructional/informational materials/resources for on and off-campus distribution and utilization including the CRU Faculty Newsletter.
      • Provide career counseling services on an individual, group and on-line basis for students and alumni who are choosing/changing a major, exploring career options, seeking employment, and identifying internship/experiential education and career-related opportunities.
      • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate training and skill development workshops to include resume preparation, job-search strategies, career information technology including Internet links, interview skills, and experiential learning preparation.
      • Develop and deliver in-person and on-line advisement and counseling services to students/alumni.
      • Create educational resources and communications (published, email, electronic, social media) based on the career and employment needs of students/alumni. Assist students in selecting appropriate educational and career goals.
      • Assist with coordination of career education events. Identify employment opportunities and promote qualified students, graduates, and alumni to local and regional corporations, non-profit and government organizations, and community partners.
      • Provide professional presentations to employers promoting CSU Stanislaus, students and alumni and participate in public relation activities.
      • Participate in planning and support all recruiting activities including on-campus recruiting activities and interviews including participation in planning and hosting Career & Internship Fairs. Coordinate employer connection services (info sessions, OCIs, tables in the Quad, etc.).
      • Collaborate with employers and recruiters by conducting outreach, employer consultations, meetings with employers, workforce development agencies, chambers of commerce, economic development boards, and other professional groups.
      • Assist and participate in the formulation and implementation of organizational goals and objectives. Participate in regular department and component meetings.
      • Collect retention-related student data for the annual evaluation.
      • Collect statistics on students advised and monitors assessment guidelines.
      • Design and implement marketing collateral & promotional efforts related to program coordination & delivery. Contribute to the development, enhancement, and delivery of the campus wide CPDC/CRU marketing and communications plan utilizing the career management system and social media platforms.
      • Promote CareerReadyU employer partners and assist with utilization of HIREStanState to connect with students and alumni.
      • Participate in appropriate personal and professional development activities.
      • Other duties as assigned.
    • Minimum Qualifications
    • Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

      Experience: Equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. (A Master's degree in counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.)

    • Preferred Qualifications

      • Master's degree or post-baccalaureate units.
      • Prior work experience in a higher education or CSU environment.

      •  

        Experience with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), FileMaker Pro, PeopleSoft.

      •  

        Experience with Focus2, Handshake, and Strength Quest is advantageous.

      •  

        Experience in coordinating career education programs and advising undergraduate students.

      •  

        Experience in career counseling, career advising, and career placement.

      •  

        Knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior, career development, and counseling techniques.

      •  

        Knowledge of career professional organizations and resources is a plus.

        Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the campus.

      •  

        General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures, activities and practices of the program area to which assigned.

      •  

        General knowledge of individual counseling techniques.

      •  

        General knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the overall operation, functions, programs, organizational procedures, and activities of the campus.

      •  

        Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.

      •  

        Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.

      •  

        Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters.

      •  

        Ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature.

      •  

        Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze, and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.

      •  

        Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.

      •  

        Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals to include faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, and other private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.

    • Special Conditions

      • Some travel off campus and between campuses may be required (Stockton - Turlock).
    • License or Certifications

      • Possession of valid California Driver's Licenses required.

    • Salary Range
    • Anticipated salary will be $5,025 - $5,528 per month plus excellent paid benefits. Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist. (Full Student Services Professional III range $5,025-$7,159)
