Marion County Business Services is seeking a Building Maintenance Specialist to join our team. The Building Maintenance Specialist will perform a variety of journey level maintenance and repair work essential to the function of county buildings. This position works under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor who assigns and outlines work projects and inspects results for compliance with departmental standards, applicable codes and regulations. It also receives training, work assignments, and general guidance on technical aspects of work from a Building Maintenance Specialist Senior.

As a full-time member of our team, Building Maintenance Specialists typically work Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Sunday through Thursday, 7:30am- 4:30pm with flexibility depending on the needs of the department and program. As a non-exempt employee, this position is eligible for overtime. This position may have on-call duties.
Typical Duties - Duties include, but are not limited to the following
  • Access all areas of buildings.
  • Maintain integrity of the buildings and equipment, commonly accomplished through painting, carpentry, plumbing, remodeling, plastering, sheet-rocking, framing, minor electrical, mechanical troubleshooting and repair, HVAC troubleshooting and repair, pneumatic and electrical control wiring, blueprint and schematic diagram understanding, and boiler operation.
  • Safely operate hand and power tools.
  • Follow oral and written instruction.
  • Support and assist other maintenance workers when need arises.
  • Assist in the training of new and existing staff.
  • May be asked to perform or assist with work in confined spaces.
  • Work without close supervision.
  • Organize and prioritize workload.

Requirements for the Position
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  1. Graduation from high school or equivalent; AND
  2. Four or more years of directly related and documented work experience; OR
  3. Any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position, as determined by Marion County.

PREFERENCES
  • Preference given for possession of a State of Oregon Apprenticeship and Training Council Journeyman's card for one of the following trades:
    • Stationary Engineer,
    • HVAC/R,
    • Plumber, or
    • Closely related trades
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must possess a current driver's license in the applicant's state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Marion County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services and review the driving record according to the Marion County policy and procedure for Driving on County Business.   • Final candidates selected for this position may be required to pass a physical examination by a county-appointed medical doctor.
  • The finalist for this position will be required to pass a criminal history background check; however, conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual for this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Journey-level knowledge of: methods and techniques used in one or more of the following trades carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring and repair, tile setting and painting, steam fitting, boiler operation and repair, arc and acetylene welding, plastering and general mechanical repair.
Substantial ability and skill to: use and operate hand and power tools necessary to building and mechanical maintenance; plan and organize work; read, understand and work from mechanical, electrical and structural blueprints and schematic diagrams; follow written and oral instructions; perform skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of County buildings, equipment and furnishings; establish and maintain professional and cooperative working relationships with other employees, vendors, and contractors; operate a motor vehicle.
Employee is expected to: understand and exhibit sound preventive maintenance skills, demonstrate the ability to identify, report and/or correct malfunctioning equipment and seek out opportunities to improve the maintenance, security and efficiency of County facilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Operates a motor vehicle; sees using depth perception; bends forward; lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries up to 50 lbs.; climbs; crawls; grasps and handles objects; hears a normal level of speech; kneels; moves carts weighing up to 500 lbs.; reaches overhead; uses repetitive motion of hands, feet, and wrists; sits; uses sense of smell; stands; stoops; talks; turns neck up to 180 degree radius; twists up to 90 degree radius; walks; sees 20/20 with correction
PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
Marion County is a qualifying public employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, full-time employees working at the County may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan.
