The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at North Carolina State University is dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and public outreach. The department offers undergraduate degrees in anthropology, sociology, and criminology, and graduate degrees in anthropology (MA) and sociology (MA, PhD). The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS).
The Department enrolls 550 undergraduate majors and provides ca. 25,000 semester credit hours of undergraduate instruction each academic year. In addition, the Department has approximately 40 Masters students and 50 Ph.D. students during a typical year. Essential Job Duties
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is accepting applications for an expert in Sociological Criminology at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor or Senior Lecturer.
The position is for a full-time instructor (1.0 FTE) and is benefits eligible. The successful applicant will teach 3 introductory and advanced criminology courses at the undergraduate level each semester and provide academic advising for up to 63 criminology majors. The position will also involve assisting our criminology internship instructor with maintaining and developing internship connections. Willingness and ability to teach the SOC 413 criminology internship course in future semesters (if needed) is preferred.
The Assistant Teaching Professor or Senior Lecturer is responsible for the coordination, planning, preparation, presentation and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities. Each instructor prepares their own syllabi for the classes they teach. The Teaching Assistant Professor or Senior lecturer is responsible for performing duties during the day or evening as assigned. On occasion, academic advisors may be asked to participate in undergraduate events, open houses, etc. that may take place during the evening or weekends.
We are particularly interested in applicants who want to build a career primarily focused on teaching and advising.
Assistant Teaching Professor and Senior Lecturer positions are two year positions, with the possibility of renewal.
Other Responsibilities
Perform other duties as assigned by the department head.
Qualifications
State Minimum Education and Experience
Senior Lecturer applicants must have a master's degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.
Assistant Teaching Professor applicants for the criminology position must have a PhD in criminology or sociology, or be ABD with an anticipated graduation date during the 2022-2023 academic year. Failure to obtain the PhD by semester start will result in hiring the candidate as a Senior Lecturer.
Other Required Qualifications
Strong commitment to excellence in teaching and academic advising is expected.
