Primary Purpose of Department:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a doctoral program with concentrations in applied mathematics and statistics. The department also offers two master’s programs in Mathematics (including a mathematics education concentration) and mathematical finance and offers a variety of undergraduate concentrations leading to the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection of our commitment to maintain the excellence of the University, and to offer our students richly varied disciplines, perspectives, and ways of knowing and learning. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage, include, and eliminate barriers to learning for students of different ages, races, ethnicities, backgrounds, identities, and abilities, and help increase the success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university.

Description of Work:

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte recognizes the differentiation of mission, goals, and objectives inherent in the diversity of disciplines represented by its colleges and departments. Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for two Assistant Teaching Professor or Lecturer positions to begin in August, 2024. These are nine-month appointments, initially for three-year terms, with the possibility of renewal. With close to 40 primary faculty members, more than 250 undergraduate majors and 70 graduate students, a masters’ program with several concentrations, and a robust Ph.D. program, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics remains one of the largest and most diverse departments in the College of Science.
Required qualifications include a master’s degree or equivalent in Mathematics, statistics, or a related area (Lecturer) or a doctoral degree in Mathematics, statistics, or a related area (Assistant Teaching Professor); A commitment to excellence in teaching students, from a variety of backgrounds, at the undergraduate level.
Responsibilities include teaching four mathematics/statistics courses each semester; advising undergraduate students; supporting the Math Pathways initiative, including curriculum/pedagogy development; providing service to the department, the university, and the profession.

Minimum Experience/Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

Preferred qualifications include experience teaching mathematics and statistics at the college level; experience in teaching large classes; ability to teach upper level mathematics/statistics classes; experience in curriculum/pedagogy development, including active and adaptive learning; experience in teaching students from a variety of backgrounds.
