Job Description:
2024 African & African American Studies, Public Health & Wellness Search
One of the distinctive features of the Department of African & African American Studies (AAAS) at Louisiana State University is the study of the history, cultures, and religions in Louisiana and their connections to Africa and the Americas with an emphasis on racial disparities in health and wellness. To seize upon and expand this distinctiveness, AAAS seeks a Tenure-track Assistant Professor, whose research and teaching on racial disparities in health and wellness illuminates how indigenous African and diasporic ideas and practices, that are also present in African American populations of Louisiana, contribute to improved health outcomes and to closing the gap in health and wellness disparities. Of particular interest is a research engagement of official Public Health practices in Louisiana and how insights from African and diasporic cultures might serve as matters for research and service delivery.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas of specialization and to work with the Chair and faculty to facilitate research relationships with LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center and local and state Public Health institutions.
A comprehensive, doctoral, high-research activity university situated in the Capitol City, Louisiana State University enrolls over 30,000 students and offers the opportunity for undergraduates to major or minor in African & African American Studies and graduate students from any of the university’s graduate programs to purse a Graduate Minor in Africana Studies.
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Public Health, Anthropology, Africana Studies, and related disciplines. An offer of employment is contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment background check.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
AAAS’ mission is to promote critical thinking and challenge students to attain the highest levels of intellectual achievement and personal development through the study of ideas, practices, theories and experiences of Africans, African Americans, and other diasporic communities. To fulfill our mission, AAAS is comprised of a visionary and diverse faculty, whose work commands a range of expertise and focuses on history, ethnicity, and gender, social, cultural, political, religious, and literary studies. Our faculty’s commitment to excellence supports AAAS’s mission to be the center of Africana Studies excellence in our region and nation. In addition, we are committed to addressing social injustices and promoting community engagement.
Toward these ends, our department offers a B.A. as well as a minor and Graduate Minor. Since its inception, AAAS has taken innovative steps to ensure that our students’ academic and civic goals and needs are met. This entails organizing and sponsoring events that involve the participation of surrounding communities. Furthermore, we work tirelessly to recruit the brightest and the best from our communities and to support student scholarship.
