Job description

Northwestern State University's Department of Social Work is seeking qualified applicants for the Assistant Professor and Director of Field Instruction. The successful candidate must:

  • Hold a master's degree accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. A doctorate in Social Work or related field, in addition to the CSWE-accredited master's degree, is strongly preferred.
  • Must have the equivalent of two years or more full-time post-master's degree professional experience. A minimum of two years full-time post-CSWE-accredited master's degree experience in social work practice required to teach "practice" courses. Previous teaching experience preferred.
  • Must hold a Louisiana Social Work License or Credential, if eligible. The non-social work professional shall hold the appropriate credential relative to her/his profession.
  • Must be proficient in computer word processing and other technologies.
  • Must be effective in teaching the assigned subject material.
  • Must possess skills to become proficient in curriculum development, instruction, online instruction, evaluation and academic counseling.
  • Must meet the required standards defined by the University.

Duties and Responsibilities (list not exhaustive)
  • Teach SOWK 4190: Field work in both face-to-face and on-line sections with an additional course at the department's discretion.
  • Participate in periodic review of course materials and in course development/revision.
  • Serve as an academic advisor and mentor for social work students.
  • Maintain required office hours of 10 face-to-face/online hours per week, and, during business hours, be attentive to departmental communications and flow of departmental work.
  • Maintain appropriate expertise and competencies through continuing professional development, including attending local, state, regional, and/or national conferences.
  • Engage in scholarly activities, including research, presentations, publication, and grant writing.
  • Actively engage in service to the social work department by assuming leadership of departmental initiatives.
  • Participate in faculty meetings.
  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
  • Engage in departmental, college, university, community, and professional service.
  • Participate in student recruitment activities.
  • Adhere to the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics and the Rules, Standards, and Procedures of the Louisiana Social Work Practice Act.
  • Represent the department in a professional manner in all activities.
Field Instruction Duties and Responsibilities
  • Distribution and collection OF FIELD applications and determination of eligibility for field placement.
  • Selection of an appropriate FIELD INSTRUCTION site for each eligible student and advising the student as to the nature and purpose OF FIELD INSTRUCTION.
  • Where indicated, and in consultation with the faculty liaison and agency field instructor, removal of students from field settings.
  • Selection and screening of new FIELD INSTRUCTION sites and terminating sites that no longer offer an appropriate learning experience for students in the program.
  • Orientation OF FIELD instructors and students as to the purpose, objectives, and requirements OF FIELD INSTRUCTION.
  • Organization of regular meetings with field instructors to provide on-going training and to obtain feedback regarding the effectiveness of the BSW program in preparing students for entry level generalist social work practice.
  • Weekly contact with field instructors to remind them of assignments that students might need input on, upcoming evaluation deadlines, training opportunities, etc., and contact information for the Director of Field Instruction and faculty liaisons.
  • Participation in site visits, videoconferencing, and phone contact if there is a problem with a placement.
  • Oversight OF FIELD education policies and procedures and implementation of changes as needed.
