The California Labor and Workforce Development Agency (LWDA) is seeking a top-notch attorney as an Assistant General Counsel. The LWDA is the cabinet-level executive branch agency that oversees the departments and boards that protect and improve the well-being of California's current and future workforce.
The Assistant General Counsel is an Attorney III position, working under the general direction of the LWDA General Counsel and working closely with the small, collaborative legal team within LWDA. The Assistant General Counsel provides advice and counsel to the Secretary, General Counsel, and other members of the LWDA executive team on a wide variety of complex and high-profile legal and policy issues. The Assistant General Counsel also provides guidance and oversight to LWDA departments, divisions, and boards, such as the Labor Commissioner's Office and Cal/OSHA within the Department of Industrial Relations, the Employment Development Department, the Agricultural Labor Relations Board, and the California Workforce Development Board on complex and high-profile legal and policy issues.
The Assistant General Counsel's work includes a wide variety of substantive fields of law, including labor and employment, government, ethics, and constitutional law. The work includes overseeing high-profile litigation, providing advice on implementation and interpretation of the Labor Code and Unemployment Insurance Code, reviewing proposed regulations, reviewing and overseeing Public Records Act responses, and advising leadership on internal personnel matters.
Telework: This position is eligible for telework and most attorneys are remote-centered. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Agency and based on the Agency's current telework policy. While the Agency supports telework, in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs.

Working Conditions
Employees in this position work extensively on computers either in an Agency or home office environment. Attorneys must handle their own word processing, and administrative support is limited. This position may require occasional in-state travel, either locally, or for one to two-night stays at other locations within California, based on assignments. This is a full-time, Monday through Friday, position. Occasionally, you may work beyond the average work week of 40-hour. There is some flexibility on work schedules, which will be determined after hire in consultation with attorney's immediate supervisor.

The LWDA was established to address issues relating to California workers and their employers.
