Position Purpose:Dartmouth believes that a 21st century liberal arts education integrates respect for, and understanding of, the unique and essential benefits of living, learning, and engaging in an inclusive global community. The Native American Program (NAP) supports the well-being and success of Indigenous students at Dartmouth. The NAP’s core work includes: advising and engagement, leadership and community development; education and training; and, advocacy.Under the direct supervision of theDirector of the Native American Program (NAP), theAssistant Director works collaboratively with departments and on committees to provide anchors of support to Native and Indigenous students. This is accomplished through the primary responsibilities: 1) Student Group Advising 2) Orientation Program Management 3) Professional Development 4) Advocacy, Consultation, and Intentional Collaboration, and 5) Assessment and Administration.The Assistant Director provides event support to the Program Coordinator of Community and Leadership Development.
Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:- Bachelor’s degree in Native American or Ethnic Studies, Higher Education Administration, Social Justice Education and Leadership, Counseling or comparable field.
- At least two years of relevant work experience in counseling, advising and mentoring students in college/university settings, particularly Native and Indigenous students.
- Background and demonstrated familiarity with Native American and Indigenous communities and issues concerning Native Americans and Indigenous peoples in higher education.
- Success in collaborating with colleagues in developing comprehensive and integrated efforts to support students.
- Demonstrated commitment to personal and departmental integrity, creativity, collaboration, initiative, multicultural education, and professionalism.
- Excellent collaboration, listening and interpersonal skills, and ability to work in a team setting.
- Demonstrated ability to foster positive and productive relationships with all campus constituencies, including institutional leaders, faculty, staff, alumni, students, and parents and families.
- Ability to balance competing demands under pressure.
- Proven record of successful experience responding to individual and community issues and crises.
- Demonstrated experience in student leadership development.
- Solid foundation in student developmental theory and its application to professional practice in higher education and student affairs.
- Demonstrated success in utilizing data for planning and evaluation of programs and services.
- Strong conflict management and resolution skills.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

Description:Student Group Advising
- Support and guide student group events and activities so that their efforts have maximum impact and serve to enhance the academic, social, cultural, and spiritual lives of Native American and Indigenous students.
- Develop relationships with student leaders to build community, provide support and guidance on a variety of personal, social, cultural, and community concerns.
- Design and implement training and workshops and continual interventions to help student leaders understand their responsibilities and learn from their experiences.
- Respect the sensitivity of tribal and cultural affiliations, students’ disabilities, health concerns, socioeconomic status, immigration status, citizenship status, and refer students to the appropriate offices.

Description:Orientation Program Management
- Conceptualize, plan, and execute the Native American and Indigenous Pre-Orientation program, subsequent leadership experiences, and outreach for the Native American and Indigenous community that foster identity and community development, build cultural resilience, and empower students as well as enhance support.
- Train, supervise, and evaluate undergraduate student Orientation Program staff.

Description:Student Professional Development
- Develop and implement programming to address student well-being and leadership growth, including internship and post-graduation information.
- Build co-curricular connections that create opportunities for increased and enriched interaction among students, staff, and faculty.
- Cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with related Alumni Relations liaison(s) and related Native American and Indigenous alumni groups (Native American Alumni Association of Dartmouth and Native American Visiting Committee) in consultation with the Director of the Native American Program.

Description:Advocacy, Consultation, and Intentional Collaboration
- Conduct outreach, develop initiatives, educational programming, and leadership opportunities addressing individual, institutional, and cultural manifestations of oppression.
- Serve on working groups, projects, and committees to advocate for Native and Indigenous communities and contribute to divisional and institutional change.
- Develop collaborative relationships with campus departments and student organizations to cultivate a positive and affirming learning environment, support students’ intersecting identities, and increase understanding of the unique issues, trends, and needs for students.
- Participate in the Office of Community Life and Inclusivity and cross-divisional initiatives designed to further Dartmouth’s commitment to institutionalizing cultural competence, inclusive excellence, and student success.

Description:Assessment and Administration
- Utilize Dartmouth strategic priorities and Native American Program strategic plan to develop learning outcomes and administer regular assessments of programs, services, and student learning and performance.
- Attend professional training programs and remain up to date on issues and strategies related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Communicate progress, trends, and pertinent data via reports and presentations to the Director of the Native American Program, Office of Community Life and Inclusivity, the Division of Student Affairs, and other relevant internal and external audiences.
- Prepare and manage student groups, orientation program, and professional development budgets, office correspondence, annual reports, and office records.
