Position Summary
This Administrative Operations Specialist I position is based in the Interdisciplinary Research Support Office (IRSO), a subgroup of the Office of Research, whose mission is to facilitate the growth of research enterprise at Rice University through the provision of high quality, outcome-focused, administrative support for Rice’s research institutes, centers, and multi-departmental and/or multi-institutional projects.
The Administrative Operations Specialist I will provide administrative and operational support to customer faculty, institutes, centers, and to senior administrators within IRSO and its sub organizations.
We are seeking a dynamic and highly motivated individual ready to kick-start their career in administration. The ideal candidate will possess a foundational knowledge of office procedures, exhibit strong organizational and communication skills, and demonstrate a keen eagerness to learn and grow.
This is a partial remote (hybrid) role with a minimum of 60% presence on campus per week is expected.
Annual Hiring Range : $42,500 to $50,000
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree
- In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted.
- 1+ year of administrative experience

Essential Functions
- Implements, administers, and evaluates day-to-day business and administrative activities of the department, function, or program.
- Act as primary provider of purchasing support to the department and support initiatives as required.
- Prepare and submit expenditure reports for faculty and support staff as required.
- Provides input on the budget, budget planning and other financial matters.
- Assists in the management and coordination of the human resource function including performance management, promotion, employee relations, compensation, job descriptions, job postings and recruiting.
- Organizes, manages and completes special projects.
- Collects and analyzes data, creates reports, reviews and explains trends; formulates and evaluates alternative solutions and recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.
- Analyzes and interprets policies; develops, revises and implements procedures.
- Provide calendar support as required, to include (upon request) the planning and implementation of associated outreach activities that may include communications, events, training, conferences, and fundraising.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
