Job Responsibilities
With our Agency's mission to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses, we provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.
This position is located at the Department of Mental Health - Division of Inpatient Services - Forensics Evaluation Services, 7901 Farrow Road, Columbia, SC 29203.
As the Administrative Coordinator I/Paralegal, working under limited supervision by the Program Coordinator II, you will conduct legal and administrative functions of the Forensic Evaluation Services.
Responsibilities for this Administrative Coordinator I/Paralegal include but are not limited to:
  • Obtains, organizes, and processes legal documents, other case documents, and CST/CR reports. This function includes but is not limited to acquiring defendants' DMH and legal records, preparing defendant charts for evaluations, and scanning orders and reports into the proper databases.
  • Serves as legal liaison between the FES and outside entities, including DDSN, judges, solicitors, defense attorneys, law enforcement, and the Attorney General's Office. This function includes but is not limited to resolving issues with improper orders, notifying the appropriate parties of "no shows" by defendants on bond as well as NGRI admissions and discharges, ensuring that DMH and DDSN do not conduct concurrent CST evaluations on the same defendant, and sending out reports as well as cover and other letters.
  • Assists in data entry and internal report production, including but not limited to the monthly CST and court order reports and the quarterly report.
  • Provides assistance and coverage as needed to the other SVPTP paralegal and other administrative staff.
  • Complies with Corporate Compliance, Harassment Free Workplace, and time and attendance policies. Demonstrate cultural and age specific competence.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
A high school diploma and relevant experience in business management, public administration, or administrative services or a bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required work experience.
Additional Comments
The selected candidate must have extensive knowledge through work experience and/or formal education of the SC Code of Laws, particularly those that pertain directly to mental health issues, including timeframes, procedures, and mandates for specific programs, particularly the Forensic Evaluation Service (FES).
