Description
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide visual inspection of stormwater outfalls, ponds, and storm infrastructure while recording data using the City's asset management software. Under supervision of water resources staff the successful candidate will complete visual inspections and collect data on stormwater infrastructure with a GPS unit and update the City's GIS based asset management database. This work includes the bathymetric mapping of stormwater ponds with the use of a kayak and sonar equipment and updating a database tracking private stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs)
- Assist in creating and updating programs to maintain compliance with the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit. Under supervision of water resources staff, the successful candidate will assist in creating and coordinating education activities and outreach materials related to water resources and update programs and procedures to help meet MS4 permit requirements.
- Provide erosion control inspections of active construction sites. Under supervision of water resources staff, the successful candidate will inspect construction sites for compliance with applicable National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit and City code regulations and will communicate findings with property owners, contractors, and City staff.
- Assist with data collection and monitoring of environmental projects. The successful candidate will assist the Environmental Specialist in updating the City's GIS tree inventory, monitoring habitat restoration, and performing data entry of project records.
- Collect and process environmental water samples as part of a water quality monitoring program.
- Assist the Engineering Department. As needed, support the Assistant City Engineer. Work may include answering telephones, support at the engineering counter, maintaining and updating the department's library of plats, easements, and public improvements.
- Other work as assigned. This position reports to the Water Resources Engineer.
Required Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS:
- Education: High school graduate enrolled in a four-year college or technical program in a related field such as geographic information systems, environmental science, water resources, or engineering. Experience: Familiarity with municipal construction documents and activities, AutoCAD, GPS, GIS software, and tree identification desirable but not necessary. Experience with Microsoft Office applications is required.
- Abilities: The successful candidate must be accountable and willing to work in the office and outside in the field. Interns must be able to work from 8am-4:30pm Monday through Friday. Steel-toed boots required for work in the field. Certain aspects of this position require some physical exertion and working in the outdoor elements, including the ability to lift 15-20 pounds and be comfortable operating a kayak. Good communication skills are essential. This position requires the ability to interact with the public and construction contractors in an effective and courteous manner in addition to maintaining a professional appearance both in the office and in the field.
- Driver's License and Background Check: The successful candidate must possess a valid Class D Minnesota driver's license and have a good driving record. A candidate will be subject to passing a background check.
