This Role Offers the Following Work Appropriately Strategy: Hybrid
This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week.
The Role
Virtual Propulsion Engineer for Propulsion Structures, Sealing, and Fastening will partner with Design Responsible Engineers to generate component-level and/or system-level design recommendations. Using commercial and/or in-house proprietary software, they actively play a role in product design and development teams. The Virtual Propulsion Engineer would have the opportunity to generate and present analysis results to engineering peers and management while collaborating with the product teams to drive product design direction. They would also aid in the continuous enhancement of current capabilities and/or CAE tools to improve prediction fidelity, execution speed, as well as develop new methods to help our organization achieve an all-virtual future.
What You'll Do
  • Conduct structural & sealing analyses for a wide variety of propulsion components across electrified propulsion hardware, engines, and transmissions
  • Retrieve and modify CAD models of propulsion components and assemblies for creation of finite element models
  • Create analytical data to drive component designs to meet product design requirements
  • Documentation of analysis objectives, assumptions, conclusions, and results
  • Collaborate with the Design Responsible Engineer to troubleshoot design challenges at hand and drive product designs
  • Cooperatively work with test engineers to enhance laboratory procedures to support the development of first-time capable analysis techniques

Additional Job Description
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience with model creation and FEA analysis
  • Familiarity with structural engineering materials, large-scale nonlinear problems, optimization, topology, reliability, robust design, and process automation
  • High level of oral and written communication skills
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office products

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • 4+ years of experience with structural analysis of propulsion components and systems
  • Understanding of elastomers and sealing technologies
  • Understanding of fasteners and joint integrity
  • Experience or working knowledge of Composite Structure durability analysis
  • Experience in using ABAQUS (Implicit, Explicit, ABAQUS CAE), Optistruct, Hypermesh, iSIGHT or similar programs (i.e. NASTRAN, ANSYS Workbench, ANSA)
  • Familiar with Fe-safe/FEMFAT, Mold Flow, DIGIMAT
  • Good understanding of non-linear analysis, failure theories and multi-axial fatigue and composites
  • Familiarity or practical experience with the principles of vehicle propulsion system design, operation, or testing
  • Experience with programming in Java, Python, MATLAB, or equivalent languages
  • Master of Science in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
