We are looking for someone with a desire to improve government to government relations while also working to educate internally and externally.
This position is for those interested in enhancing the relationships with tribal nations through collaboration while working to preserve and protect and revitalize the lands as present-day stewards of WSPR.
We encourage you to apply!Under the direction of the Tribal Director this position serves as a liaison and project manager over Tribal Relations activities between the agency and all the tribes in WA State.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Develop, manage, and implement Tribal Relations projects within WA State Parks.
- Connect with agency leaders, managers, and staff to communicate about projects, procedures, and/or policies.
- Serve as a liaison between WA State Parks and Tribal Partners.
- Serve as interagency liaison within the agency to provide feedback and guidance related to processes, procedures, and feedback gathered from roundtable/feedback sessions with tribal partners.
- Provide consultation and tribal community engagement.
- Performs outreach, engagement, and day-to-day communication with WA State tribes under the direction of the Tribal Director.
- Attend tribal events and cultural community events as a representative of WA State Parks.
- Develop and deliver trainings.
- Serve as the backup to the Tribal Director.
Qualifying candidates will meet one of the following criteria:
- Bachelor's degree in business, communications, government relations, Native American and Indigenous studies, ethnic studies, environmental science and management, environmental justice, natural resources, or a related field, AND three (3) years of experience as defined below, AND a valid driver's license.
- Seven (7) years of experience as defined below AND a valid driver's license.
Experience performing complex communications, project management and implementation, and governmental liaison and/or Tribal Relations work.
Additional Abilities, Skills, and Knowledge:
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal legislative processes and demonstrated capability in understanding policies and priorities and extrapolating such information to make judgements and executing successful strategies involving intergovernmental affairs, media, and tribal community outreach.
- Working knowledge and demonstrated experience with Native American tribal protocol, custom, tradition, culture, and governmental relations.
- Strong analytical, writing, and oral communication skills.
- Able to independently formulate and deliver specific messages and information, often with little notice or preparation, and in support of WA State Parks and Recreation executive policy positions and direction.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze issues and identify pathways to achieve key objectives.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively build and maintain relationships by practicing a balanced approach in listening and commenting.
- Ability to educate public officials and staff on priorities and issues, even in the face of opposition and skepticism.
