The Job

The Technical Writer translates often-complex health insurance information into simple and user-friendly language, anticipating and answering questions and helping SCAN members make informed decisions. Whether developing content, updating versions or proofreading materials, the Technical Writer plays a key role in the SCAN member experience.

You Will

  • Develops letter templates and other content for an older adult audience that is clear, concise, compliant and error-free while maintaining the brand voice.
  • Owns version control, utilizing approved templates and creating multiple versions with variable data.
  • Creates a range of member-facing communications in addition to correspondence, such as outbound phone messaging, staff talking points, or social media posts/responses.
  • Proofreads, edits and revises content as needed for grammar, spelling, style, tone and consistency.
  • Recommends and implements process improvements for efficiency and accuracy, enabling the team to more easily absorb additional versions and increased personalization.
  • Represents Communications on cross-functional work groups and in meetings as needed.
  • Participates in other writing tasks as requested, such as messaging for other audiences (providers, brokers).
  • Understands relevant regulations (e.g., CMS, DHCS) and ensures that all member communications adhere to regulatory requirements and are submitted for review and approval by compliance, privacy, and/or legal departments as needed.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; establishing personal networks; and participating in professional societies.
  • Actively supports the achievement of SCAN’s Vision and Goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Marketing, Technical Writing, Communications or related field is preferred
  • 5-7 years’ writing experience, whether as a journalist, business writer, Technical Writer or communications professional.
  • 2 or more years’ experience conducting documentation quality assurance, including editing, reviewing, and writing.
  • Experience in healthcare, health insurance or other regulated industry required.
  • Experience producing content for senior audience a plus.
  • Eagle-eyed proofreader: your own work is clean and error-free and you spot and correct others’ errors.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: you will closely collaborate with teams across the organization on a number of initiatives, so you know how to listen and when to speak up.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Chinese, Korean or Vietnamese a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Highly motivated, well-organized multi-tasker, able to flex easily should projects or priorities shift.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and meet deadlines consistently without sacrificing quality is a must. 
  • Familiarity with project management platform, such as Asana or Workfront.
