Job description

OVERVIEW:

Develop and support a Best in Class Engineering Organization capable of supporting the present and future growth of the business (with its associated challenges) and creating solutions to technical packaging challenges. Directly responsible for developing the engineering teams’ capabilities, structure and talent and executing the agreed strategy.  The Technical Design Engineering Manager will be responsible for working cross functionally to develop, design and implement the strategic direction for the engineering organization and driving continual improvement toward world class service in meeting the market’s technical packaging needs for protection, quality, cost and lead time of estimates and solutions.

 

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

I.  Operational/Professional/Business

  • Contribute to the business strategy by helping identify, prioritize, and build the engineering teams’ capabilities, behaviors, structures, and processes.
  • Develop, modify and execute operational objectives, workflow planning and support procedures
  • Monitor and evaluate performance relative to Engineering goals and objectives, analyze variances, develop and drive action plans to achieve optimal results, and report on key performance metrics
  • Collaborate with internal teams to promptly identify and engage available resources to resolve service problems in a structured and process minded way
  • Oversee the establishment and maintenance of engineering systems for domestic and international Case Centers including 2D and 3D modeling software, electronic vaulting software, and various supporting software as required
  • Collect and analyze data concerning workflow management and capacity constraints to ensure meeting our customers’ delivery dates
  • Support the estimating process working collaboratively with Case Centers and other departments to refine this process
  • Develop and continually improve system to monitor and analyze quote hit ratio
  • Manage the front-end order fulfillment processes including contract review, design, drafting, bills-of-material administration, technical support to manufacturing and to sales, and project management; responsible for a timely and smooth release to production planning
  • Assure that solid project management tools and disciplines are utilized, including the identification of risks, resource needs, rational prioritization process, engineering schedule adherence, and regular communication with all stakeholders concerning the engineering design
  • Support solid financial management including budgeting, operating plan development, adherence to departmental budget and capacity planning
  • Develop internal contact points and maintain solid relationships with management, sales and marketing teams to ensure relevant information is delivered to all other departments and teams in the organization
  • Develop processes to ensure effective communication and exchange between the Operations group and Engineering
  • Ensure that the Engineering Team operates professionally and efficiently to manage customer need

 

II.  Leadership

  • Develop and execute strategic business plans, operational goals and performance metrics that drive productivity and insure a high level of customer service and satisfaction
  • Facilitate initiatives to build a high-performing Engineering division aligned with the strategic leadership agenda, including providing customer focused technical support
  • Ensure an ethical leadership and coaching culture is cascaded through the Engineering Division
  • Provide clear leadership by demonstrating understanding of business trends and needs
  • Provide customer insights and technical expert feedback to internal teams
  • Actively supports Pelican’s commitment to Quality and Safety, with an emphasis on continual improvement

 

III.  Compliance

  • Ensure Engineering processes and practices at all facilities within assigned region are in compliance with federal, state and local regulatory requirements, including, but not limited to FAR, ITAR and FCPA.
  • Proactively review programs to ensure employees at all levels of the organization understand their roles and responsibilities with respect to compliance initiatives

 

V.  Management

  • Recruit, lead, train, coach, motivate  and develop a highly-skilled technical engineering team
  • Drive people processes (performance and talent management) to ensure that employees’ level of performance and capabilities meet current and future standards
  • Oversee large-scale projects as determined in the annual Engineering operational plan as well as participate in functional and cross-functional initiatives
  • Implement reward strategies to ensure decisions and practices are fair, consistent, objective and in-line with business goals
  • Develop and promote feedback mechanisms for employees to influence continuous improvement of Engineering processes and procedures
  • Support development and enhancement of core competencies that drive individual/team performance against established goals.
  • Foster a team environment that encourages collaboration and peer support.
  • Foster a culture of inclusion that encourages employee contributions and insures respect and support of all types of individuals.

 

V.  Innovation

  • Review and benchmark internal and external environment to improve Engineering policies and initiatives to enhance overall business performance with the objective of achieving best in class practices.
  • Identify and drive communication and sharing of learning experiences across functions to facilitate continuous improvement
  • Working under minimal direction must be able to identify, according to broadly stated goals, analyze and resolve a wide range of issues, providing quick and decisive solutions within the context of existing policies and identify the need for revision or creation of policies.
  • Follows company policies and practices as outlined in the Employee Handbook and/or applicable employment agreement. Follows safety guidelines and procedures in accordance to the job.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

 

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Education:  Bachelors Degree in Engineering and/or Business Administration or equivalent specific experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years leadership experience in Manufacturing or Engineering.
  • Understands business and processes and the link between Engineering strategy and business strategy.
  • Ability to develop clear, actionable steps from overall strategy & completes projects within established timeframes/budget as directed by manager.
  • Ensures Engineering deliverables are provided as appropriate to internal and external client needs, identifies new opportunities for adding value, and maintains leading-edge knowledge of Engineering issues.
  • Recruits, leads, trains, coaches, motivates  and develops a highly-skilled technical Engineering team and fosters a team environment that encourages collaboration and peer support
  • Effectively applies performance management to create a high-performance culture within the Engineering division
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, project management skills
  • Proficient with software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite and other appropriate software
  • Ability to engage, inspire, influence people
  • Ability to handle “crisis” situations and ‘difficult’ clients in a calm and professional manner
  • Demonstrated initiative, judgment, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong sense of accountability and a desire to excel in leadership
  • Ability to negotiate mutually beneficial solutions across a customer base with competing priorities
  • Professional customer demeanor in both face-to-face and remote situations

  • Must be able to interact effectively and cooperatively with employees at all levels.
  • Must be flexible regarding working hours. Must be able to work evenings and weekends, with or without advanced notice.
  • Must be able to operate in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ensures that staff is contributing at maximum potential through rigorous hiring practices and an emphasis on training and development initiatives, including coaching and counseling direct reports in their performance and professional development, with final authority for approving pay increases, hiring decisions and disciplinary actions.
  • Emphasizes ethical leadership and decision-making to protect Pelican’s brand and reputation.
  • Establishes challenging, productive and achievable goals for direct reports; measure results by establishing checkpoints to track progress.
  • Must be able to travel, nationally and internationally, as necessary.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be frequently required to execute standard physical activities within the facility areas (i.e. stand, walk, sit, use hands/fingers).
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be occasionally required to execute non-standard physical activities within the facility areas (i.e. climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch).
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • This position requires repetitive hand/wrist activities.
