The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Information Technology Infrastructure Management Division (IMD), SacMetro IT Operations Office, is looking for detail-oriented, energetic, personable, and self-motivated career-minded Student Assistants for an opening in the Sacramento office.
Under close supervision by the Information Technology (IT) Supervisor II, in a learning capacity, the Student Assistants (SA) will perform IT-related duties resulting in the experience and training in the field of IT support, located in Headquarters (HQ) IT Operations. The SA will be working in a learning capacity performing IT related duties resulting in experience and training in computer science.
The SA, while participating in a learning capacity, also helps provide support alongside the HQ IT Operations IT staff. This includes varied interaction with HQ IT Operations program staff to assist with the resolution of a wide range of relatively simple duties.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday - Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Minimum Qualifications
- Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Computer knowledge and ability to use the Microsoft Office with good typing skills.
- Knowledge and ability to use basic office machinery such as fax, copier, printer, telephone.

Preferred Qualifications
- Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.
- Knowledge of:
- Electronic computer systems; electronic data processing equipment and its capabilities.
- The basic concepts of hardware, software and telecommunications and networking for platforms supported by Caltrans Headquarters.
- Principles and techniques of studying work processes for new or revised electronic computer applications, technical report writing, and statistical methods.
- Excellent ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines with ability to handle assignments in a professional and timely manner.
- Strong attention to detail and produce thorough, accurate results.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently or in a team environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the daily operations of HQ IT Operations IT Support IT functions, including responding to Tier 1 help desk issues, assist with and observe the maintenance operations of IT Endpoints, and interact with customers to resolve a wide range of issues and requests.
- Assist in performing system and software upgrades. Review procedure manuals for accuracy and completeness.
- Assist with imaging and deployment of new Endpoints and peripheral equipment, including helping customers migrate data as necessary and system configuration.
- Assist in compiling report data, including hardware inventory.
- The SA will assist with other related duties as necessary.
