** Cover letter required for all positions and optional for facilities, campus services, and hospitality positions unless otherwise specified.Job Description SummaryThe Staff Counselor is a member of a close and collaborative team of mental health professionals who provide comprehensive, confidential mental health services to a vibrant community of Wake Forest University-Reynolda Campus undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. The successful candidate for this position will provide culturally responsive short-term counseling/therapy and crisis intervention to students and consultation and outreach to the WFU community. The University Counseling Center (UCC) is focused on providing equitable and inclusive services to the campus community, particularly to historically underrepresented populations. The UCC is a training site for master’s-level interns, as well as doctoral psychology interns, for whom all staff members serve as supervisors, consultants, and mentors. The University Counseling Center is part of the Health & Wellbeing Team of offices within the Division of Campus Life. The Health & Wellbeing Team is comprised of the University Counseling Center/Safe Office, Deacon Health, and the Office of Wellbeing. The Staff Counselor works collaboratively both within the Health & Wellbeing team and across other departments as members of the Division of Campus Life to ensure delivery of integrated professional services consistent with the mission and strategic directions of Campus Life.Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Provides individual and group counseling/therapy to Reynolda campus students
  • Conducts crisis assessment and intervention for urgent/walk-in appointments
  • Evaluates students for mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders and determines a clinical disposition; including referrals to outside agencies and higher levels of care
  • Diagnoses disorders, including nature and extent, and determines the appropriate course of treatment for students
  • Utilizes an integrative approach of evidence-informed therapeutic modalities to address distress, treat mental health diagnoses, and assist clients in achieving potential
  • Provides didactic training, consultation, and clinical supervision to UCC graduate trainees in psychology and counseling
  • Provides outreach, workshops, professional consultation, and training on various mental health and wellbeing topics to all members of the University community as needed
  • Keeps timely, accurate, and ethical records consistent with UCC policy and relevant professional code(s) of ethics

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Terminal degree in a mental health field (i.e. psychology, counseling, social work, or couples and family therapy) from an accredited program
  • Eligible to practice as a mental health professional in the state of North Carolina (preferably independently licensed within 6 months of start date)
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals from underrepresented groups and diverse backgrounds, and ability to use culturally responsive clinical care modalities
  • Knowledge, skill, and ability to provide effective therapeutic methods for clients from a diversity of backgrounds and traditionally underrepresented populations
  • Knowledge of and ability to use a broad range of psychotherapy and counseling methods within a time-limited scope of service
  • Knowledge of and ability to use crisis intervention skills
  • Ability to effectively facilitate workshops, training, and seminars
  • Ability to use sound clinical judgment and to manage confidential information appropriately
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated efficacy with general workplace technology and electronic health records
  • Adherence to APA/ACA/NASW ethical codes, UCC policies and relevant state and federal laws
  • Anyone entering a full-time, permanent position at the University Counseling Center is required to obtain an unrestricted license in their discipline (counseling, psychology, social work, etc.) in the state of North Carolina within one year of hire as a condition of employment. Employees must also maintain their license and remain in good standing with their state licensing board as a condition of employment. Failure to comply may jeopardize future employment within the University Counseling Center.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience with mental health service provision in a college or University Counseling Center and providing culturally responsive psychotherapy within a time-limited scope of service
  • Knowledge of clinical training program functioning
  • Experience providing culturally responsive and developmentally appropriate clinical supervision to master’s and/or doctoral interns or trainees in mental health fields
  • Desire to collaborate with relevant campus advocates (Safe Office, LGBTQ+ Center, Intercultural Center, Women’s Center, Magnolia Scholars, etc.) to improve mental health service provision
  • Demonstrated understanding of the dynamics of privilege and oppression, and the impact these have on equity, access, and opportunity in higher education/the workplace

Accountabilities:

  • Provides clinical consultation and supervision to master’s and/or doctoral student trainees
  • Serves in an on-call rotation capacity for emergencies and crises. Responds to student problems and assists students, parents, faculty, and others in crisis situations

Physical Requirements:

  • Constantly remaining in a sedentary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Occasionally moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Occasionally adjusting or moving objects up to 50 pounds in all directions
  • Constantly communicating with others to exchange information
  • Constantly repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers
  • Constantly assessing the neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned
