About Us

Maple Counseling is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization and our mission is to provide low-cost comprehensive mental health services to individuals of all ages, couples, and families, and to provide training for graduate and postgraduate students who are working towards licensure in the mental health field.

Since 1972, we have helped over 300,000 people of all ages from infants to the advanced elderly to receive critical mental health services, expanding to support people of all ages and all areas throughout Los Angeles County. Now, via tele-health, our services are available to anyone in the state of California.

Position Summary

In 2024, Maple Counseling will be celebrating 52 years of dedicated service to the community, and currently seeks a Development and Communications Manager who has experience working broadly in non-profit fund development; has strong writing skills and experience; detail-oriented; has a talent for multi-tasking and organizing; and has excellent communication skills. Reporting to the CEO, the Development and Communications Manager provides key support and oversight in all areas of development and institutional giving, serves as the primary liaison between donor interests and the CEO, and is also able to provide administrative support as needed. Maple Counseling fosters a culture of learning and supports professional development of its staff, including recruiting new team members who are looking to advance to a new tier in their career.

This is a hybrid position with 1-2 remote days.

Essential Tasks

These are core functions of the job. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Development

  • Working with the CEO, plan, manage, and implement all phases of individual, foundation, municipal and corporate giving campaigns; manage the solicitation, acknowledgment, and stewardship process, as well as maintenance of records, and monitor progress to make adjustments as needed.
  • Working with the CEO and Development Committee, develop an annual Development Plan for achieving fundraising goals and establish a master calendar that outlines all fund­raising events and campaigns.
  • Working with the CEO and Development Committee, manage a year-round program to cultivate new prospects and seek out new funding opportunities from diverse income streams, including conducting research on donors and prospective individuals, corporations and foundation partners.
  • Create monthly fundraising reports and other database reports as needed, and generate donor lists on a regular basis as requested.
  • Work with the CEO and any event consultants and vendors as needed to support fundraising and outreach events, including volunteer management when not handled by a consultant.
  • Support the CEO with preparation for all Board meetings and Development Committee meetings; development-related meeting materials, Development Committee meeting minutes, and related logistical support.
  • Support the CEO and Development Committee to solicit in-kind contributions.
  • Work with the CEO and other designated staff for budget preparation, including grant projections.
  • Create reports to the Board and Development Committee on the progress of all fundraising and campaigns, as well as foundation, corporate, and government support; provide other reports and statements as requested.
  • Work with the CEO on maintaining regular contact with contributors, corporate sponsors, and business and community leaders. Communicate with and answers inquiries from donors through phone calls and email correspondence.

Grants

  • Manage the annual grants calendar, grant tracking, and all grant applications for corporations, foundations, and government agencies. This includes writing grants or supervision of grant writing consultants when applicable; coordinating and/or creating all grant attachments and back-up materials to submit with all applications; writing grant reports.
  • Liasson with the finance department for all financial requirements related to grant applications and reports.
  • Coordinate with the CEO to follow-up on pending applications with funders.
  • Remain in compliance with all government, foundation and corporate partners.
  • Regularly prospect for new institutional partners.

Events

  • Working with the CEO, manage all events related to fundraising, donor cultivation, and/or board engagement, including the bi-annual gala.
  • Create mailing lists for invitations and chair and/or sponsorship letters.
  • Create gala reports, managing all event spreadsheets.
  • Manage event website and donation platforms.
  • Track and create updated reports on guest attendance and donations.
  • Follow up with collections.
  • Enter all donations and updates with donor information into the donor database.
  • Assist with check-in and set up of public events.
  • Support events related to program outreach and staff cultivation as needed.

Communications

· Working with a communications and graphic designer consultant(s), oversee the development and production of all support materials used to promote Maple Counseling's fundraising, PR, and outreach campaigns.

· Working with a communications and graphic designer consultant(s), oversee the development and production of regular weekly postings to social media with content that is inspiring, educational, and/or relevant.

· Working with a communications and graphic designer consultant(s), oversee the development and production of a monthly e-newsletter, as well as any other electronic communications as needed.

· Working with a communications and graphic designer consultant(s), oversee the production of organizational materials such as Annual Report, About Us, programmatic tri-folds, and etc.

· Working with the CEO and Outreach Task Force, develop an annual Communications & Community Engagement Plan for achieving outreach goals.

· Regularly update and maintain the contact information and groups within Constant Contact.

· Coordinate with the website designer(s) on ongoing updates as needed.

Administration

· Process all donations and maintain accurate records in donor database system (Salesforce), coordinate with finance/admin staff, and prepare donor acknowledgement within 48 hours of receipt, including establishment and disclosure within IRS guidelines of donor benefits. Manage archival needs of former donor database system (Raiser’s Edge) as needed.

· Oversee the maintenance of all donor files and records; develop and administer all donor benefits programs in accordance with IRS guidelines.

· Provide excellent customer service to donors and other constituents.

· Serve as part of the management team to assist the CEO in setting and implementing organizational goals and policies established by Maple Counseling leadership.

· Train, manage, and evaluate the performance of all development consultants and volunteers.

Minimum Qualifications

· B.A. degree in a relevant field.

· Any combination of skills and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform this job effectively.

· Experience working in a non-profit work environment is required.

· Must be a problem solver, a self-starter, and is not afraid to tackle difficult problems and learn on the fly new items as needed.

· Proficient in data management, can interpret reports, organize statistics, and has a vision to see the end result from the beginning, and knows how to break a process into steps to get the desired results.

· Minimum of two (2) years of experience in development, preference given to experience with diverse revenue streams (individuals, foundations, corporate, and events).

· Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google apps and Outlook.

· Ability to handle confidential donor/constituency information with sensitivity and integrity.

· Experience working with a donor database (Salesforce); including the ability to run database queries and reports.

· Strong organizational and overall administrative skills.

· Exemplary verbal/written communication skills are required (writing samples will be requested).

· Availability for occasional nights and weekends.
