Job Description

Job Summary

This position functions as a Sports Medicine physician for Northwestern Medicine Student Health Service (NMSHS) - Evanston Campus and as a Team Physician for Northwestern University Varsity, Club and Intramural sports.  Assists Head Team Physician in policy development, implementation and other administrative roles as directed by the Head Team Physician.

Primary Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

• Provides primary medical care and Sports Medicine care to NU students through Northwestern Medicine Student Health Service on Evanston campus.
• Under supervision of the Head Team Physician for the Northwestern University Department of Intercollegiate Sports Medicine, provides medical care and assigned event coverage for athletic teams, and conducts a Sports Medicine clinic for student athletes as directed by the Head Team Physician.  Participates in Athletic Department meetings and training as directed by the Head Team Physician.
• Assumes on-call responsibilities on nights and weekends for varsity student-athletes’ needs.
• Refers patients to outside medical specialists and coordinates care from outside consultants.  Advises and consults parents and other University departments as appropriate.
• Attends and participates in staff meetings and internal education conferences.   Serves on various Student Health Service committees as assigned.  Participates in providing education and supervision of medical students, residents, fellows, nurses and nurse practitioners.
• Adheres to established Health Service policies and procedures and perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Graduate of an approved medical school. 
• Completion of an approved internship and primary care residency.
• Completion of an approved Sports Medicine fellowship.
• Board certified or board eligible in primary specialty
• Holds a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine (CAQSM) or is eligible to sit for the exam (CAQSM must be obtained within 18 months of start date).
• Valid State of Illinois medical and controlled substance licenses
• Valid federal DEA license
• Availability and willingness to cover athletic events on nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary and scheduled in collaboration with the Head Team Physician and other members of the Sports Medicine Team.
• Strong general medical skills and acceptance of the responsibility to provide general medical care as necessary both for athletes and the general student body as scheduled and directed by the Head Team Physician, NMSHS Medical Director and/or the NMSHS Director of Operations.

Minimum Competencies:

• Diagnosis and management of common sports injuries and issues.
• Diagnosis and management of common general medical issues in collegiate.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Eligible for faculty appointment.
• Two years of experience beyond residency/fellowship training.
• Experience working with athletes.

Preferred Competencies:

• Excellent communication skills.
• Experience using medical databases/electronic medical records systems and basic computer skills.
• Experience teaching in medical field.
• Ultrasound experience in musculoskeletal medicine.
• Comfortable in management of non-surgical fractures.
• Working knowledge of NCAA rules particularly as it pertains to medical care.
