Under general direction, is responsible for managing the operations of a major recreational program or for overseeing the operations of a group of recreation centers in a defined geographical area of the City; performs related duties as required.
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.) Directs and coordinates the recreational programs and activities within a geographical district or specialized program including facility operations; prepares or assists in the preparation of schedules for personnel and recreational programs, activities and events;
Plans, promotes and evaluates the recreational programs, activities and facilities within an assigned area; develops new programs and recommends their implementation;
Oversees the budget process for assigned area; oversees and coordinates the maintenance of petty cash funds and collections for fees, charges and tickets in assigned area; develops and administers budgets for an assigned area;
Assists in developing, organizing, coordinating and conducting citywide regional and statewide special recreational activities and events such as tournaments, meets, concerts, and festivals;
Makes decisions and/or recommendations for an assigned area regarding personnel needs, assignments and other actions and material, supply, equipment and maintenance needs; makes hiring recommendations to fill vacancies;
Meets with community groups and other interested parties for the purpose of promoting recreational programs and departmental objectives and policies, resolving problems and exchanging information concerning recreational interests and needs; makes presentations before these groups;
Conducts staff and related meetings with subordinate recreation personnel;
Supervises the work activities of subordinate personnel; monitors work performed and evaluates subordinate performance in writing; provides training and communicates relevant information to subordinates;
Conducts formal training sessions, clinics and workshops in a variety of recreational specialty areas for staff personnel, athletic officials, special groups and program participants;
Coordinates marketing, contributions, grants and/or volunteer utilization efforts for an assigned area with the department's marketing and development sections; assigns and supervises volunteers;
Analyzes, interprets, evaluates and/or consolidates records and reports submitted by staff;
Prepares memos, letters and regular and special reports; prepares and/or revises sections of various manuals, prepares grant applications and proposals;
Coordinates safety programs for an assigned area; recommends administrative and operating guidelines and procedures;
May interview, select and assign athletic officials to league and tournament games.
Possession of a bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience managing the operations of a recreational facility or major program including one (1) year of supervisory experience. Substitution(s): A master's degree in recreation administration, public administration, or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) year of the required non-supervisory experience. Additional experience, as specified above, may be substituted for two (2) years of the required education on a year-for-year basis.
