This is an internship position that can be paid or unpaid depending on the college or University's internship policy where the student attends. If the student will be a paid intern, the position will be a limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Justice and the State of Wisconsin.

Hours of Work: It is anticipated that this position will work part-time (approximately 20 hours/week) and allows for flexible hours .
Headquarters: This position is headquartered at the Risser Justice Center located at 17 West Main Street in Madison.

Position Summary
This position works under close supervision of the Division of Law Enforcement Services, Bureau of Justice Information and Analysis (BIJA) Director. BJIA conducts criminal justice research and program evaluations and provides analytical support to meet a variety of needs and to aid in policy and data-driven decision making. This position is responsible for providing input, assistance, and coordination of various research and data collection efforts for the Department of Justice (DOJ).
In addition, this position is responsible for working cooperatively on various aspects of assigned research projects under the direction of the Bureau Director and with input from bureau analysts. These responsibilities involve providing input into research design and methodology, assisting with the development of data collection instruments, accessing secondary data, and conducting various analyses to meet a given need.
This position is involved in both primary and secondary data collection and data quality control, as well as utilizing a variety of statistical techniques to analyze large datasets. This position is directly involved in reviewing the existing literature on a particular topic to support the development of the research or evaluation design and writing of research reports. Research results are intended to support policy development and decision making that serves the best interest of the criminal justice system in the State of Wisconsin. This position utilizes both quantitative and qualitative research methods, data collection techniques, statistical skills, and the ability to utilize software programs to manipulate and analyze data.
In addition, this position is responsible for synthesizing large amounts of information and effectively presenting research results, both verbally and in writing, to reach a variety of audiences. This function also requires working directly with large, complex datasets, working cooperatively with staff both internal and external to the bureau, and coordinating with external research partners.
Salary Information
The Research Analyst position is in pay schedule 08 and pay range 04. The starting pay will be between $20.24-$25.00/hr. Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.
Job Details
This position may be eligible to work 50% remotely after onboarding and training; reporting to the headquarters in Madison as needed. Including reporting on multiple consecutive workdays if needed. Travel to the headquarters is not eligible for travel reimbursement.
This is an internship position which can be paid or unpaid depending on the College or University Internship policy. If the student can accept payment, the position will be considered as a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position This Intern/LTE position is limited to the Spring Semester. Students must be a resident of Wisconsin.
The Department of Justice does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.
A background check, including fingerprints, will be completed on applicants prior to selection.
Qualifications
Special Requirements:
  • Must be a current College or University Sophomore or higher-level student.
  • Must provide current transcript of completed courses.
Minimally qualified Applicants will have the following:
  • Professional or educational experience conducting social science research or, statistical analysis in a criminal justice related field.
  • Experience, education or training collecting, managing, and analyzing data.
  • Experience preparing visual representations of data (charts, maps, tables, etc.)
  • Utilization with one or more specialty software tools for data collection, research and/or analysis (Tableau, R, SPSS, SAS, Stata, REDCap, Crystal Reports, ArcGIS, Power BI, etc.)
  • Experience using Excel, Microsoft office Suites or other Office products to create documents, reports etc.
In addition to the minimum qualifications, applicants will have training, education, or experience in the following:
  • Education or professional experience with the criminal justice system
  • Experience working directly with accessing, extracting, and/or analyzing data from databases (SQL, Oracle, Access, etc.)
  • Experience disseminating analysis or research findings to a variety of audiences through reports, presentations, or related means of sharing information.
  • Exposure to identifying and addressing data quality issues.
