Position Summary
The Program Administrator for the departments of Philosophy and Religion is responsible for all front office functions and serves as the problem-solving point person for a variety of matters, under the supervision of the administrator and department chairs. They support department faculty and serve as the face of the department to all visitors. They coordinate many of the administrative functions for the department, its faculty and special events activities. The Program Administrator interacts on a daily basis with faculty, students, visitors, other university staff, and various individuals and organizations outside Rice University.
The Program Administrator provides support to the department chairs, administrators, and directors of undergraduate and graduate studies and assists with tasks that include, but are not limited to: the department's General Announcements, course offerings, and course schedules.
Ideal candidates should have strong verbal and written communication skills, basic knowledge of managing budgets, and the ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
This position is benefits-eligible and exempt, and has a expected minimum salary of $49,000, dependent on experience and qualifications.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree
- May substitute additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis in lieu of the education requirement.
- 1 year of related professional experience (not as a student or volunteer) in office administration and event planning and execution.

Essential Functions
- Administers the daily operations with general guidance by the chairs and administrator
- Coordinates course scheduling with faculty
- Assists with student recruitment, student records, curriculum support, and coordinating the accreditation process
- May assist department administrator to monitor project budgets and the development of longer terms budget plans
- Proactively plans and coordinates logistical aspects of events, including both in-person and virtual in conjunction with the administrator
- Provides support to faculty, staff and students as related to the program(s)
- Assists with student recruitment, student records, curriculum support, and coordinating the accreditation process
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions
- Processes faculty reimbursements
- Processes travel reimbursements and honoraria for guest speakers
- Supervises student assistants
Preferences
- 1 year of related professional experience (not as a student or volunteer) in office administration and event planning and execution.
