The purpose of this position is to assist the Specialty Medication Pharmacist or their designee, with providing support for patients receiving specialty pharmaceuticals within the Loyola University Health System. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, the technician will be responsible for processing new and refill specialty orders including verifying and re-verifying pharmacy benefits, assisting patients with reimbursement issues, continuous follow-up with the specialty pharmacy, and keeping providers aware of prescription processing.
Insurance Authorization: Work closely with the pharmacist and provider to prepare and obtain insurance prior authorizations for Specialty Medications. Pursue appeal for insurance denials when needed. Maintain continuous communication with specialty pharmacy to update status of medication order. Perform all documentation needed and follow-up on problems or issues needing to be resolved.
Reimbursement Services: Assist patients with enrollment in financial assistance programs including third party, manufacturer and locally funded plans. Follow up with funding programs to confirm patient eligibility and gather all required reporting and documentation. Contact patient, pharmacist and provider regarding status of financial assistance applications and funding available.
Communication: Communicate effectively with insurance companies and internal and external health care providers. Screen, identify and resolve clinical or processing issues related to Specialty Medications. Provide telephone support to patients receiving Specialty Medications. Document all patient interactions. Gather relevant patient-specific information and transmit to specialty pharmacy as directed by the pharmacist.
Quality control: Participate in quality improvement and quality assurance programs to monitor performance of services as requested by the Specialty Medication Pharmacist.
Off-campus services: Assist off-campus LUHS providers and pharmacists with processing and access to Specialty Medications. This shall include prior authorizations, denial appeals, financial assistance and communication with specialty pharmacy.
Education
Minimum
High school diploma or equivalent.
Credentials/Licensure
Minimum
Possess an Illinois Pharmacy Technician License.
Possess Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT).
Retail pharmacy technician: Experience with adjudicating prescription drugs,
corresponding with insurance companies and processing payments, STRONGLY preferred.
Familiarity with specialty pharmacy products and operations preferred.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Good math skills (multiplication, division, addition, subtraction) in calculations involving fractions, decimals, percentages and volumes.
