Direct Support Staff/Personal Assistant
Position Summary: Looking for a kind and positive female in her 20s or 30s to be a “buddy” to a 24-year old woman as she engages in her preferred activities in the community. Responsibilities include engaging in activities alongside her at home and in the community, providing transportation, assistance staying safe (encouragement to self-advocate), etc. Would like someone who is available for about 2-4 hours on Saturday mornings. The ideal candidate would understand what it looks like and means to be a “buddy” and a peer, rather than distinguishing themselves as an “aide.”
Location: San Rafael, CA
Compensation: $35 per hour
Work Schedule: 2-4 hrs each Saturday morning
Qualifications and Characteristics:
- Trained in safety care: CPR, first aid, community safety, etc.
- Experience working with individuals who are highly perceptive and emotionally intelligent with limited receptive and expressive language skillsClient has been identified with selective mutism - speaks at home, but out of the home, she is more anxious and is less able to self-advocate
- Observant of details, responsive, reliable, and able to initiate new tasks and activities
- Flexible, adaptive, and open to learning more about the client and how best to work with her, including support needs and communication system
- Patient - go at the client’s pace and respect the need for transition time
- Strong communication skills
- Consistent and committed - punctuality is a must
- Doesn’t do well with people who are bossy
- Likes someone who is engaging and will be involved in activities with her, but is ok with her giving yes/no answers and not having her respond in depth
- Help with advocating and doing most of the talking on her behalf outside of the home
- Enthusiastic, takes initiative
- Asks questions, but doesn't put her on the spot - able to gauge that based on her responses
- Not going to look like her aide or staff - ideally this person could be participating in dance classes and ceramics classes with her as a peer
- Clean driving record/driver’s license
- Open to filling out employee packet and tracking hours through a financial management service (funding source for California’s Self-Determination Program)
Nice to Have (preferred, but not required)
- Pursuing degree in occupational therapy or speech therapy
Requirements and Core Responsibilities:
- Transportation to and from preferred activities, including a dance class and a ceramics class
- Assistance staying safe out in the community, especially being mindful of street safety and occasional eloping.
- Consistent communication with parent and other support staff.
- Client is allergic to almonds - must be willing to carry and administer an epi-pen and benadryl, if needed
