Shenandoah University’s Payroll department is accepting applications for a Payroll Manager. This is a full-time benefited position located in the Bowman Building, downtown Winchester, Virginia.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Coordinates payroll for the University by designing systems, directing the collection, calculation, and entering of payroll data
  • Complete the following tasks assigned to this position:
    • Pays employees by directing the production and issuance of paychecks or electronic transfers to bank accounts.
    • Reviews summaries of earnings, taxes, deductions, disability, and other applicable earnings types
    • Determines payroll liabilities by approving the calculation of employee federal and state income and social security taxes, and employer's social security, unemployment, and workers compensation payments.
    • Complete payroll tax filings included by not limited to:
      • Payroll period tax deposits
      • Quarterly tax returns (941, State withholding, VEC)
      • Annual tax returns (W-2s, 1095s)
    • Coordinate taxable benefit calculations, employee loans, garnishments, and tax liens
    • Coordinate with Accounts Payable regarding insurance and other withholding payments
    • Review information provided by Human Resources for accuracy
    • Balances the payroll accounts by resolving payroll discrepancies.
    • Provides payroll information by answering questions and requests.
    • Maintains payroll guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures.
    • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
    • Maintains employee confidence and protects payroll operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Direct auditing of payroll information (both internal and external)
  • Serve as back up for Payroll Accountant
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION:

  • All work is performed under the general direction of the Controller.
  • Direct supervision is exercised over one staff member (Payroll Accountant) including but not limited to scheduling, training (including cross training), and review of work
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Complete understanding and ability to work with:
    • Payroll processing
    • Payroll taxes
    • Payroll compliance
    • Employee withholdings (including insurance and retirement) and garnishments
    • Basic accounting
    • Internal control techniques and methods
  • Exceptional leadership ability, communication and organization skills, and management presence in carrying out an effective payroll program for the University. This also includes the ability to work independently and as part of a team and to be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Graduation from a college or university of recognized standing with a degree in accounting or related field, and with computer and Excel software skills and abilities.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Ability to handle information in a confidential and professional manner.
