The City of Folsom has occasional needs for part-time help with general assistance. This can range from entry level filing and data entry to more specialized and skilled clerical and field work. These positions are hired on an as needed basis by department, and are temporary, part-time, hourly, without benefits.The Parks & Recreation Department is currently recruiting for an Office Assistant (Temporary, Part-Time)to assist the Parks and Facilities Maintenance Division with a variety of clerical and customer service duties.
Schedule
- Schedule can be flexible, up to 25 hours per week.
- Duration: position is ongoing as long as needed and supported by the budget. Budget is currently available through July 2024.
- Non-exempt, hourly rate. Starting rate can depend on experience.
- Part-time positions are hourly and not eligible for benefits, and are limited to working 999 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). No full-time regular appointment will be made from this class.
Note: Unfortunately current active CalPERS members are ineligible for employment with part-time positions.
Examples of Essential Duties

- Assist the public in person or by phone; answer inquiries related to department services, programs, and operations.
- Obtain information, resolve discrepancies or errors, disperse relevant information, or refer customers to the appropriate personnel or location.
- Explain the proper use of forms and documents.
- Screen and distribute incoming mail and send out informational materials and letters.
- Screen and route telephone calls.
- Verify that information or data is complete, accurate, and consistent.
- Organize, inventory, and order supplies for the department.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Employment Standards

Knowledge of:
- Modern office practices and departmental specific methods, procedures, policies, and regulations.
- English grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
- Common word processing, spreadsheet, and database software packages.
- Basic arithmetic and calculations.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Accurately and quickly enter data into an automated system.
- Answer a variety of questions related to departmental programs and processes.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Minimum Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
- Some experience and/or training in an office setting, paid or unpaid, related to filing, reception, processing mail, typing, data entry, answering telephones, assisting the public or other office support duties is highly desirable.
- Public sector experience is desirable.
License, Certificate, Registration Requirements:
Some positions may require possession of, or the ability to obtain and retain, a California Class C driver license by the time of appointment. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Physical Requirements:
Work is performed in a typical office environment. (1) Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting for long periods of time; occasional bending or squatting. (2) Lifting: frequently up to 10 pounds; occasionally up to 25 pounds. (3) Vision: constant use of overall vision; frequent reading and close-up work; occasional color and depth vision. (4) Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing; frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. (5) Hearing/ Talking: frequent hearing and talking, in person and on the phone.
