SUMMARY: A Health Unit Clerk/Nurse Assistant (HUC/NA) duties include the organization and ordering of data related to patient care activities and patient education.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Organizes and maintains unit files of unit forms, correspondences and directives.
- Acts as a receptionist. Exercises tact, diplomacy and judgment in screening phone calls and communicating with vendors, physicians, nursing and ancillary employees.
- Provides basic care as directed to include bathing, feeding, assistance with activities and hygiene.
- Answers call lights and responds to patient requests promptly. Demonstrates competence in taking vital signs, measuring I&O, etc.
- Keeps RN and LVN informed of changes in patients’ conditions or patients’ requests.
- Acts as an information conduit to members of the department, other departments, patients, visitors and physicians.
- Keeps work area neat and organized. Organizes work and completes assignments in a timely manner.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Inputs data and orders into the computer system .
- Demonstrates proficiency in managing resources, following policies and procedures, utilizing equipment in a safe manner. Actively contributes to cost controls by managing time, resources and supplies effectively.
- Nurse Asstistants/HUC’s who provide care to Joint Replacement patients will receive 1 hour of ortho/joint replacement specific education yearly.
- Other duties as assigned from time to time.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:
- Certified for HUC or training programs to establish competency preferred.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (both verbally and in writing).
- Knowledge of fax machine, intercom system and telephone system.
- Previous clinical experience in a patient care setting preferred, with successful completion of orientation and training to the point of competence.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification required.
