Purpose of the position
Defines monitoring, maintenance, expansion, contingency, and recovery plans and strategies to ensure the network is responsive to changes in demand. Troubleshoots network issues and develops appropriate solutions, resources, and deployment processes. Keeps informed of the latest technologies to enhance knowledge of networking hardware, software, and best practices. Research and testing of new and emerging technologies in partnership with vendors. Works as part of a team of Network Engineers, to ensure that the University campus network environment is reliable, available, and performant.
Requirements
- Strong Smarthands network device, rack, stack, patch, troubleshooting, and decommission skills.
- Ability to identify network devices (routers, switches, firewalls, APs) and understand their basic role and functions.
- Knowledge and experience with providing console access to devices, working on a telephonic bridge with remote engineers, and sharing console access via screen-sharing software.
- Familiar with rack elevations, enterprise campus MDF and IDF closets, and data center environments.
- Patch cabling, power cord connections, closet cable dressing.
- Reliable and punctual in an SLA-driven schedule.
- Able to follow instructions from senior engineers both verbal and written.
- Accurate and reliable in following site visit procedures, communication requirements and protocols.
- Professional demeanor, strong communication and client-facing skills.
- A positive attitude.
- Ability to work autonomously without direct supervision and solve unexpected problems (technical or non-technical) on the fly.
- Driven to deliver quality work.
- Experience with installs and refresh of routers, switches, and APs.
- CompTIA Network+ and/or CCNA skills are a plus.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift up to 10 lbs at all times
- Must be able to use both hands
- Repetitive finger motion/computer use
- Must be able to have close and distant vision
