Motor Vehicle Representative 1 Full-Time
Starting Salary: $40,193
Plus $3,087 when working in the five boroughs of NYC, or Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester counties.
Minimum Qualifications for provisional appointment* - To be eligible for a provisional appointment, candidates must have:
Graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma AND you must have
Either
1: one year of experience in a position where your primary responsibility was providing customer service** to the general public*** either in an environment with substantial face-to-face interaction or in a call center environment.
OR
2: 30 college semester credit hours
* A provisional appointment is authorized by §65 of the Civil Service Law when there are fewer than three list eligible willing to accept appointment to the position.
In order to be provisionally appointed to the Motor Vehicle Representative 1 title, the candidate must meet the minimum qualifications as specified above. If offered a provisional appointment to the Motor Vehicle Representative 1 position, the candidate must pass an open/competitive 4.2B examination which will be given at a later date in time.
**For this position, Civil Service defines customer service as dealing with many different individuals on a continuous basis where verbal communication is the primary means of accomplishing the duties of the position.

Duties: As a Motor Vehicle Representative 1 or Motor Vehicle Representative 1 (Various Language Parenthetics), you would have substantial in-person or telephone contact with members of the public seeking services or information regarding licenses, registrations, identification, testing, insurance, penalties, hearings, and related agency programs. You will be expected to effectively use a computer with multiple applications running simultaneously. You may be required to operate telecommunication consoles, cameras, a cash drawer, photocopiers, fax machines, scanners, calculators, etc. You may be responsible for processing customer payments such as: cash, checks, credit card charges, and inventories of documents, license plates, registration stickers, and other security items. In an issuing office setting, the majority of your time will be spent assisting the public by greeting the public as they arrive in the office as well as in processing complex and varied transactions by entering data on a personal computer using a keyboard and mouse, and/or providing detailed information to large numbers of people. If assigned to a call center, you would wear a headset and would be expected to effectively answer telephone calls which are automatically and continuously distributed by a complex telephonic system. Telephone calls may be monitored for quality assurance. As with many jobs interacting with the general public, you may encounter uncooperative or sometimes hostile individuals. You would be expected to act in a calm, courteous, and reasonable manner even under very difficult, highly stressful, and at times, confrontational circumstances.

Hours: Work schedules will be made based on the operational needs of the office to ensure that there is sufficient coverage when there is high customer demand. You may be required to work early and late hours, as well as weekends. Additionally, you may be asked to work in a different issuing office within the same county.
Qualifying experience: Examples of qualifying experience could include call center agent, customer service representative, public facing hospitality professional, sales representative providing information and service, or a telemarketer. If verifiable, we will accept and prorate appropriate part-time and volunteer experience.
Examples of non-qualifying experience include but are not limited to: Experience as a geriatric ward aide, home and day care aide, or school bus driver, would NOT be considered experience with a broad range of the general public.
Your required educational credentials must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the United States (U.S.) Department of Education/Secretary of Education. If awarded by an institution outside of the U.S. and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency.
