MOTOR VEHICLE CLERK- Chenango County's Department of Motor Vehicles Unit has an opening for a MOTOR VEHICLE CLERK. This is a position in the Motor Vehicle Unit of the Chenango County Clerk’s Office. The work involves responsibility for assessing eligibility for and issuing drivers’ licenses and permits, and vehicle registrations. An employee in this class reviews applications and a variety of supporting documents for accuracy and completeness of information and uses a personal computer to transmit information to a central computer at the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. The incumbent also administers and grades vision, hearing, and written tests, collects fees and penalty charges and balances a cash drawer. A considerable amount of customer contact is required in carrying out the duties of this position. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Senior Motor Vehicle Clerk or Deputy County Clerk with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the duties of the position. Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of an employee in this class. Does related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
To qualify candidates must have graduated from high school or have possession of a high school equivalency diploma and EITHER:
(A) Possession of an Associate’s Degree in Secretarial Science, Office Technology, or a closely related field; OR
(B) Two years of full-time paid office clerical experience or its’ part-time equivalent which included customer service; OR
(C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Regulations of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration require that prospective employees of the Department of Motor Vehicles who will be involved in the issuance of enhanced driver’s licenses or non-driver identification cards, or who will administer knowledge or skills tests for commercial driver’s licenses must be a United States Citizen and undergo a state and nationwide fingerprint based criminal history background check; and such search must indicate that the prospective employee has not been convicted of, or charged with, a disqualifying offense as set forth in 49 CFR 384.228 and 49 CFR 1572.103

The position pays $18.89 per hour (2024 hire rate) and includes a full benefits package.
