EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- BLS required
- Certified Medical Assistant
- Training in plastic surgery procedures a plus
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- At least two years of experience in a physician office or Medical Spa
- Experience working in an operating room or procedure room; cosmetic surgery a plus
- Experience calling in pharmacy requests
- Comfortable using email and interacting with Internet applications
- Knowledge of practice management and word processing software
- Pleasant speaking voice and demeanor
- Good communication skills
- Neat, professional appearance
RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Patient and Surgical Care
- Assists the surgeon in the operating room
- Administers medications and injections as directed by the surgeon
- Calls patients to relay advice and instructions from the surgeon
- Assists the surgeon while he/she is examining patients in the office
- Removes sutures or dressings as indicated by the surgeon; reapplies dressings as needed
In-Office Operating Suite
- Prepares the operating facility and cleans the room and instruments after each procedure
- Disposes of contaminated and disposable items, per OSHA guidelines
- Makes sure all appropriate surgical instruments are ready for the surgeon
- Ensures proper sterilization techniques (OSHA standard) are used for instrument trays
- Keeps supply room and operating room neat and well stocked
- Coordinates the maintenance scheduling/testing of the autoclave and other surgical equipment used in the operating room
- Completes paperwork when submitting pathologic specimens, and notifies lab that a specimen needs to be picked up; verifies patient insurance for the appropriate lab
Outside Operating Facilities
- Calls ahead to determine whether cases are running on time; ensures surgeon arrives at the facility on time
- Brings any “special equipment" needed to outside operating facilities, including implants
Other
- Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations
- Ensures OSHA manual is up to date, and that all staff receive adequate training
- Arranges for all biohazardous waste pick-up
- Oversees surgical equipment maintenance
- Maintains patient confidentiality; complies with HIPAA and compliance guidelines established by the practice; releases PHI in accordance with the practice's HIPAA Compliance Plan, attends regular HIPAA training, maintains data security by refusing to share computer and other passwords, and reports all identified and suspected HIPAA violations to the Privacy Officer
- Maintains detailed knowledge of practice management and other computer software as it relates to job functions
- Attends annual CPR, and OSHA training programs
- Attends all regular meetings
- Performs all other tasks and projects assigned by the Manager or physicians
Access to PHI (Protected Health Information)
This position has extensive access to PHI. It requires the review of computerized or paper-based medical records, lab results, and tests, in order to perform clinical duties as well as communicate effectively with patients. It may also require access to computerized and paper-based reimbursement data (such as referral forms) – which contain both a patient's clinical and financial information.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Typical Physical Demands
Position requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, as well as manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Standing and walking is involved. Employee will occasionally be asked to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds. Normal visual acuity and hearing are required. Employee will work under stressful conditions, and work irregular hours. Employee will be exposed to bodily fluids on a regular basis.
