Manager Quality and Education of Clinical Coding Documentation and Integrity

* This position can be remote for candidates living in states that have been approved for remote work location.

Position Summary

The Quality and Education Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining a quality management program and plan for CDI and Coding to include education needs for optimum, complete, accurate and compliant documentation and final coding for all divisions of the organization.


Job Duties

OPERATIONS
Assess current activities to identify areas of high risk and evaluate risk factors in documentation and coding practices and develop and implement training and Education programs for physicians, CDI staff and coders.
Collaborate with appropriate personnel at various levels in the entity and system to develop and standardize organization wide documentation guidelines and compliant coding practices
Develop, implement and maintain a standardized, organization wide, quality program with education plan to ensure consistency of quality data for the organizations key performance metrics.
Effectively evaluates and monitors clinical documentation practices and coding quality to identify opportunities for improvement. Intercedes promptly to mitigate organizational risk.
Develop, implement and maintain policies and procedure to monitor and maintain the success of the Quality and Education plan, help to identify risk, and prevent variances.
Establish, implement and maintain a formal review and audit process for compliance of documentation and coding to include education needs.
Provide direction and feedback as a subject matter expert
QUALITY & ORGANIZATIONAL IMPROVEMENT
Creation of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for CDI and Coding team.
Monitor, evaluate compliance and take necessary actions to address variances in KPIs.
Establish, implement and maintain an annual CDI and Coding compliance audit strategy to include monitoring and reporting compliance to stakeholders.
Analyze CDI and coded data by establishing effective education and monitoring plans.
Develop and monitor ongoing strategic education plan highlighting the importance of correct coding initiatives, DRG and Present on Admission (POA) assignment, and effects on Risk of Mortality and Severity of Illness.
Collaborate with Quality and other departments to establish effective processes to support initiatives and ensure quality coded data based on each patient's complex encounter.
Assist with identification and implementation of process improvement utilizing industry best practices and benchmarks to improve documentation practices and final coding for Texas Health.
FISCAL MANAGEMENT
Manages and monitors Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to include physician agreement and response rates, as well as final coding accuracy.
Use of monitoring tools to determine consistency with system initiatives, determine success and identify opportunities.
Collaborate with department leaders to identify and resolve issues related to DRG validations, documentation or coding discrepancies, and / or other revenue cycle opportunities.
Monitors budget monthly to ensure usage of overtime and contract labor are within budget, create action plans as necessary and address variances.
HUMAN RESOURCES
Mentor, motivate, coach and evaluate employees while empowering them to speak up, express ideas and contribute to decision making.
Recruit, interview, hire and train the right team member to help them be their best.
Hold employees accountable for quality metrics.
Monitor to meet targets for employee engagement / satisfaction scores and develop action plans to address variances when appropriate.
Monitor to meet retention targets to retain top and significant performers.
Promote professional growth and development and encourage creativity and innovation.
Conduct check-ins / rounding, utilizing applause programs and recognition when appropriate.
Implement effective communication methods to build a cohesive team in a remote environment.
PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTABILITY
Collaborates with all customer groups, internal and external, delivering Quality and timely information.
Facilitates and creates an environment of open communication where mutual respect and understand is practiced.
Stays current with industry changes that impact CDI and Coding, formulates plans and implements best practices.
Research opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge by attending workshops, seminars, conferences and completes all required training.


Education
Bachelor's Degree Nursing, Health Information Management or Healthcare related field Required
Experience
5 Years Progressive healthcare environment experience Required
and
3 Years Leadership experience in Coding, CDI, Quality, Compliance or related area within a large complex healthcare organization or healthcare system, to include acute care hospitals with an Epic EMR using Computer Assisted Coding (CAC). Required
Licenses and Certifications
RN - Registered Nurse AND, BSN Upon Hire Required
Or
RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator AHIMA Upon Hire Required
Or
RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician AHIMA Upon Hire Required
CDIP, CCDS, CIC, and CCS certifications a Plus 
Skills
Advanced knowledge of work within a complex acute care hospital or hospital system CDI and Coding department.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local documentation guidelines and ICD-10 coding guidelines.
Proficient in software applications, to include the electronic health record, Coding and Documentation Integrity systems and Advanced MS Office suite skills.
Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with direct reports, physicians, hospital executives, and other stakeholders.
Strong interpersonal and excellent problem solving skills.
Ability to formulate, organize, trend and analyze data for sound decision making responding quickly to prevent negative variances.
Change agent, capable of motivating and guiding teams in a dynamic and progressive environment.
