Job description

Manage assigned university Public Safety initiatives on all campuses. These initiatives include, but are not limited to, coordinating safety and secruity efforts, managing Public Safety technology, and maintaining associated electronic devices. Oversee Special Services which includes risk and security assessments. Assist with the review and revision of the university emergency management plan and emergency response plans. Assist with emergency response team (ERT) activities. Reports to the Assistant Director of Public Safety or designee.

Examples of Duties:


Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:

Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, including, but not limited to, the Clery Act, FERPA, Title IX and university policies and procedures.

Manage assigned unit(s).

Coordinate, train, and provide guidance to Public Safety managers and related personnel.

Develop, implement, and update safety and security policies and procedures.

Manage Public Safety technology and associated electronic devices including video surveillance cameras, alarm systems, and mass notification systems.

Assist regional campuses with Public Safety efforts and initiatives, safety and security related matters, and Public Safety technology and associated electronic devices.

Coordinate Public Safety related training for regional campus security staff and other security personnel.

Ensure campus security personnel adhere to professional standards, as well as to all applicable university policies and procedures.

Manage Public Safety related documentation and records on activities for regional campuses.

Assist with issues and complaints regarding safety and security; ensure issues are addressed and resolved.

Evaluate facilities and university property for Public Safety issues and conduct vulnerability assessments.

Manage and communicate results of risk and security assessments of campus property and facilities related to safety, security, natural and man-made hazards, or various incidents.

Maintain relationships and serve as a liaison to external response and regulatory agencies, including local, state, and federal law enforcement and other related government agencies.

Assist with management of activities of Emergency Response Teams on all campuses.

Assist with management of the university’s written emergency management plans, policies, and protocols, to ensure compliance with established standards and practices.

Assist with managing, planning, developing, and implementing exercises designed to test the university’s ability to respond to various critical incidents using a standardized approach to emergency management.

May respond to emergency situations that require the exertion of force (i.e., setting up barricades, moving furniture, assisting at security detail).

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:


Bachelor's degree in public administration, criminal justice, emergency management or related field and five years of Public Safety, policing, security, or emergency management experience in a campus-based higher education environment.

Or the combination of relevant education and experience equivalent to nine years Public Safety, policing, security, or emergency management in a campus-based higher education environment.

License/Certification:

Valid Ohio driver's license with safe driving record.

Knowledge Of:

General knowledge of local, State of Ohio, and federal laws and regulations
Safety and security issues and practices
Possess a broad institutional awareness required for planning and logistics for the integration of systems and resources
National Incident Management System (FEMA)
Technologies associated with Public Safety and mass notification systems

Skill In:

Facilitating group exercises and projects
Coordinating training and training development
Organizing information and projects
Interpersonal and written communication (e.g., to compose incident reports, correspondence, and training materials)
Software applications, including Microsoft products and relevant computer technologies
Proactive style of leadership that encourages teamwork, interaction, and group participation

Ability To:

Work independently and as part of a team
Provide leadership and direction; analyze situations and develop effective solutions
Multi-task while managing multiple projects and assignments
Correctly interpret and apply laws, policies, and procedures
Travel from building to building frequently and off campus as needed


Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

Full-time police experience.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:


Light work-Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
